WILL WAS GRATEFUL that Kelly didn’t feel sorry for him. He especially didn’t want that from her for reasons he didn’t want to begin to break apart. Suffice it to say, he didn’t feel sorry for himself, either.

Feeling sorry would be easier than the burden of feeling like he’d let down his parents. William Kent had left big boots to fill. As the second son, Will didn’t walk to the same beat and that had always made him feel like a disappointment. Disappointing someone he couldn’t care less about wasn’t something that would keep him awake at night. Feeling like he’d let down the two people who cared most about him was a recipe for heartbreak.

Two years had passed since his father’s death and it was too late to have the discussion that Will had been mulling over in his mind. He might not be cut out for the family ranch business. Mitch, his older brother, seemed natural with it all, as did Amber, his sister. What she’d done to bring the ranch to the leading edge of organic meat was nothing short of a miracle. She loved it and that made working long hours worth it to her.

Will missed the adrenaline rushes that came with battle. Being home made him feel strangely disconnected. He spent too much time in his head.

“Was it hard?” she asked and he tuned back into her.

“What?”

“Being in the military.”

He issued a sharp breath. “Not for me.”

The truth was that he didn’t feel at home when he was home and he’d stopped feeling at home in the military, which was why he’d left. Lacey was supposed to be the answer but that hadn’t exactly worked out as planned.

But those were not the issues he wanted to discuss. Like everything else, he shoved down the thoughts deep and forced a smile.

“But you don’t like talking about it,” she said.

“I don’t see the point.”

Will stood and walked over to the window.

“I thought I lost you back there, Kelly.”

“I’m here now, Will.”

“I didn’t like it.”
