Phil shivered and pulled the small square excuse for a blanket up under his chin. How they expected anyone to sleep on the hard, plastic mattress was beyond him. And, if that wasn’t bad enough, the entire cell stank of stale piss.

Worrying about the kids, he said a silent prayer of thanks that Alexis had come home when she had, or he’d be in a complete pickle right now. There was no telling how long they intended to keep him locked up. He was aware it didn’t look good and wished he’d been honest right from the start.

His sole purpose for lying in the first place had been to protect his kids but look at what a mess he’d made of that. No kid deserved to go through what they had this past year. Losing a parent at such a young age was devastating, and Ben was only just coming right. What effect would something like this have on them both? Especially if they charged him with murder.

After trawling through his phone last night, they had been able to establish he’d been out with his footy mates, bowling and on for a curry the night Erin vanished. The kids hadn’t been home. But his excitement of being let off the hook was short lived when DI Karlson said it made them even more suspicious if anything. They didn’t know an exact time she had been killed and that meant it could’ve happened after he got home that night or in the early hours of the following morning. Basically, he was well and truly fucked.
