Dreams
Letâs end on a high note! Youâve made it through the tough parts of the conversation, and now itâs time to celebrate and have fun.
It might be tempting to skip this section or give it less time than the others, but this would be a big mistake. If you want alignment, engagement, and motivation, it is better to be pulled by our shared vision of the future than simply avoiding trouble or pain. Articulating dreams will likely require more vulnerability than you think. For many, it can even be controversial to allow ourselves to hope for the best.
This section is an opportunity to let our imagination run wild and be our most ambitious or even selfish.
Itâs possible that none of what we desire will come true, of course, but that doesnât matter. What we want is to set our bar high and dream together of all that might happen if all goes well.
This is the time to dig deep, dream big, and speak to the situation from our authentic hearts.
Dreams are the ultimate outcomes that reflect our wishes. They might be about money, career advancement, accolades, and more. Perhaps we want to work on a project so successful that it makes industry news, or we want to build an incredible team thatâs asked to take on even bigger challenges next.
Prompt questions for this section should tease out the most superlative, yet grounded, outcomes imaginable. Here are some ideas for getting started:
If this goes incredibly well, what will be true after it is over?
How will you feel during and afterward?
Where will you be in your life, career, or geographically?
What business metrics will have shifted? And by how much?
Try to be as specific as possible. It can be helpful to create a visualization of what you want:
âIâm on stage at TED talking about the success of our project.â
âI am in a beautiful café on the Amalfi Coast with my spouse, sipping champagne and celebrating my raise.â
âWe are all in a meeting with the CEO and her team being asked our opinion on a critical new investment strategy.â
âWe are all receiving a bonus in recognition of our contribution to the companyâs mission.â
âIâm looking around the room at all of you and feeling a sense of pride at everything weâve accomplished.â
âIâm feeling closer to my spouse than ever and have renewed enthusiasm and energy for getting back to work.â
Your dreams are your most inspiring reasons for working on this project. At their best, they provide a deep sense of purpose and hope.
Dreams are your goals combined with heart, action, and humanity.
Sharing them with each other not only inspires you and cements your alignment but also once again creates a room full of allies. We find it almost impossible to hear peopleâs heartfelt desires without awakening in ourselves a desire for them to have that.
We truly hope that by having this conversation, you achieve your dreams and desires in both your professional and personal lives (and help others in the process, too). Thatâs what itâs all about.
