CHAPTER 10
In Texas the sky was cloudless blue and the weather so crisp their breath frosted. Hunter met them at the airport gate and Johnâs heart lurched. She wore a black Stetson, starched Wrangler jeans, oxblood Roper boots, a black silk shirt and a buckskin fringed leather jacket. The fringe moved with every step. Her hair hung loose to her shoulders, and her cheeks blushed from the cold. Randall said, âBe still my heart.â
She reached them and said, âWhat are you two talking about?â
âJust how good you look.â Randall said.
Hunter looked at John, âWhat about you?â
John stammered, âYouâ¦you look awesome.â He looked down as he finished. It touched her and she cocked her head to look at him.
Hunter said, âLetâs get your gear. The Suburbanâs parked right outside and ready to go.â
âYou want one of us to drive?â asked Randall. âWe donât mind.â
âNah, yaâll had a long trip. This way you can sit back and relax and Iâll get you there in no time.â
Randall leaned toward John and whispered, âDid you bring a sap?â
âWhatâd you say?â asked Hunter.
âOh nothing.â
**
Hunter drove like always. She didnât tailgate much, but she didnât stay behind anybody long, just ate up the miles and used the roads as if she were the only one on them.
Curves were almost a challenge. John and Randall felt the G forces leaning them into the seatbelts on each one.
In one long, sweeping curve where John didnât pay attention and didnât brace, he was all the way across the center part of the seat with his shoulder and arm pressing into Hunterâs side. He felt the edge of the bulletproof vest and the hint of firm roundness of her breast and it was all he could think of during the turn. He was loath to break the contact, loath for the curve to end. Hunter laughed at him, and made him warm inside.
When the curve straightened, both took a moment longer than they needed to separate. Something definitely passed between them. Randall righted himself in the back seat and said, âHunter, you might want to buy some bull riding rigs for us next time, see if we can stay on. I donât think either one of us made it to the buzzer.â
**
They pulled up to the Sector Headquarters in Marfa less than three hours later. The temperature was a dry fifty-four degrees and no breeze. Everything seemed sharper, crisper, clearer. Antelope were prancing and playing in the field nearby.
They exited the vehicle and stretched, enjoying the fall weather. Hunter said, âWhat a day, huh?â
They left their bags in the car and entered the large beige building, passing by the tall flagpole with the U.S. flag hanging limply in the sky. The Chief greeted them and told them they could operate out of the Intel office.
It was a long room, fifteen by thirty, with several desks and computers, maps covering the walls with hundreds of multi-colored pins stuck in them, file cabinets, boxes of papers stacked in corners and on an unused desk.
