To the best of Marie’s knowledge, Mr. Marston had never held a ball. Dinners and other social functions, yes, but not a ball. That alone was exciting and the house was buzzing with anticipation. Every new snippet of information, even the smallest of titbits, was picked up, shared and discussed among the servants. As she made her way down into the kitchen, having come from Mr. Marston’s office, Marie felt like she was carrying a nugget of gold – what she had been just told would surely trump every other rumour about the party.

Mr. Marston had called her up into his room ‘’for relief’’, as he liked to put it. Before he had bent her over his desk and had his wicked way with her, he had placed a silk scarf on her eyes and tied it tightly behind her head. The fabric had covered Marie’s face from her forehead to her cheeks and it had felt more like a mask than a blindfold. ‘’You ought to get used to having your pretty face covered, pet,’’ Mr. Marston had whispered, leaning down to press his mouth against the exposed skin of her neck as he took her from behind, fingers digging into her hips. ‘’After all, no one goes to a masquerade without a mask.’’

At that moment, Marie had been a little too aroused to fully comprehend his words, but later, as she adjusted her skirts to go back to work, she understood the implications of that statement. Mr. Marston was holding a masked ball. While a ball promised polite elegance and courtly dancing, a masked ball promised a different kind of elegance – mysterious and enchanting, perhaps even a little bit dark and titillating. Like everyone else, Marie had heard that even the most distinguished lords and ladies were more willing to lose their inhibitions when their identities were disguised, that secrecy gave way to the kind of cheerful depravity that Marie had become well acquainted with through Mr. Marston and his friends.

Of course, there was the insinuation that Marie would be attending the masquerade as well, but in what role remained a mystery. She pondered over it on her way back to the kitchen. Someone would have to serve food and drinks at the ball, clearly, so maybe the servants would be wearing masks too. Or perhaps Marie would be there as Mr. Marston’s pet. Marie found it a little unlikely, because while she frequently provided entertainment for her master and a select few of his guests, she knew that the ball had a much longer guest list.

The excitement and the note of uncertainty melted together into the heady and intoxicating feeling of anticipation, and Marie could barely keep from smiling too wide as she stepped into the kitchen. She neglected to greet the cook and the housekeeper who she found there, instead she announced the news as soon as the door had closed behind her. ‘’It’s a masked ball,’’ she said and could not help grinning at the sight of the others’ wide eyes and surprised faces.
