Chapter Five

Puma took Ben’s hand in his and led him toward the walkway that ran between the main house of the estate and the four-car garage. The door to the staircase that led up to his above-the-garage apartment was around back. As they walked, several security lights flicked on and off, lighting their way.

Neither man spoke.

The closer they got to the privacy, and the bed, they both wanted, the more anxious Puma grew. Just because he had loved Ben for the past seven years was not a good reason to welcome him back into his bed so easily. After all, the man had broken his heart once upon a time. And the man had been engaged until just that morning.

But had he really broken it off? Or was this just a last-ditch encounter with an old friend before he went back to the woman and tied himself down for the rest of his life?

Ben’s murmured, “You okay, wildcat?” pulled Puma from his ever-darkening thoughts.

Stopping on the stoop, Puma pulled his hand from Ben’s and turned to face the man. Suddenly seven years of hurt and anger and brokenness coalesced into a ball of uncomfortable, undefinable emotion deep in his belly. Before he allowed Ben into his body, into his bed, or even into his home, he needed some answers. “What are you wanting from tonight?”

His heart dropped when Ben looked at him through the semi-darkness, his expression unreadable. But then, Puma had never been able to read faces and know the emotions behind them. Which might be why his boss had gotten away with screwing him and ruining the rest of his life.

It also meant that he couldn’t tell if Ben was about to lie to him or not.

Finally, Ben blinked and his expression cleared as the man smiled. “What do I want from tonight? I want to love you, and cuddle with you, and spend the night making you happy. I want you, wildcat. I think the bigger question is, what do you want from tonight? Can you forgive me for fucking up seven years ago? Can we put the past to rest and move on? Can you see a future for us?”

Ben’s sincere expression, his tone, and his words released something in Puma. It was as if he had stuck a pin in the balloon of emotion that had been growing and growing the past few minutes. All at once, the past was gone, and only the present and future remained. “I want you. Yes. Yes. And yes.” Puma smirked as he answered Ben’s questions.

After turning away long enough to unlock the door, Puma grabbed Ben’s hand again and quickly dragged him up the stairs to his apartment. The door was set to lock automatically, so no one would disturb them, even if they did get on the property.

The nightlights Puma had put in every room provided more than enough light to see the way through the apartment. He dropped Ben’s hand when they reached the bedroom door, then crossed the room in the dark.
