Walking into the hospital that day was… an experience.

Everybody’s eyes were on me – or at least it felt like it, and I wanted to crawl somewhere and hide. After Joseph left my place, I realized the hickeys dotting many, many places on my body and wanted to strangle him for it – lucky for him, he was already gone. And lucky for me, they were mostly in places that no one else would see, so I put on a high-necked blouse and took my behind to work.

“Last night was something, wasn’t it?” Nurse Hall asked after greeting me as I approached the desk. My eyes got big, and I glanced around before leaning toward her.

My hands played at the neck of my shirt, trying to tug it up in case one of the marks on my neck was peeking out. “Hmm? What do you mean? What about last night?”

She lifted an eyebrow. “The storm, child. It knocked out power for half of the city. You didn’t know?”

“Oh!” I said, a relieved smiling crossing my face as I straightened up. “No, I had no idea it was that bad.”

“You must have been sleeping hard to miss a storm like that. All that thumping and bumping and screaming.”

Oh no, I experienced plenty of that.

“But it’s just as well,” Nurse Hall continued, putting a stack of patient files on the counter. “I’m sure you needed your rest, after what happened. How are you feeling, baby?”

I gave her an assuring nod. “I feel okay.”

“Good. These are your patients this morning. Dr. Winslow is back in, but we have you taking on some of her load with Dr. Wright. I know he’ll be relieved to see you. He’s been running since he got here this morning.”

Right on cue, Aviva and Joseph rounded the corner. I couldn’t help noticing the extra pep in his step, and a cocky grin played at my lips, knowing that bounce was probably largely due to his night with me. I looked away, pretending to be immersed in my patient files.

“Glad you decided to join us, Nurse Echols. Hope you’re not expecting any special treatment though. We’ve got work to do.” I looked up to see Joseph standing there wearing that same smug expression I’d come to loathe over the last few months.

Beside him, Aviva sucked her teeth. “Come on, Dr. Wright. She passed out two days ago, I think we can cut her some slack.”

“We don’t have that luxury, Dr. Winslow. Some of us had to be on time this morning.”

“I was on time this morning,” I cut in, shooting a glare in Joseph’s direction. “The chief of staff paged me as soon as I got here, so I was occupied.”

He shrugged. “And now you’re not. Your ability to hang around the information desk socializing isn’t one of the categories you need a good review in, so let’s go. We’ve got patients to see.”

I fought hard against the urge to roll my eyes, and picked up my patient files to carry to my little section of the desk.
