CHAPTER 9

The sergeant answered the phone, “Burglary, Sergeant Parks here.”

“Yes sir, I told that lady who answered the phone that I might have some information about the picture of that girl on TV that you guys have been looking for, and she transferred me to you,” the caller informed the sergeant.

“That’s right, it's my case,” he thought this might be the break they needed to find the elusive Madame X.

“Is there any reward offered?” the caller asked sheepishly.

“No, just the satisfaction of helping to keep good folks safe. Do you know who she is?” Parks knew the caller was just looking for money, but he hoped he could appeal to his altruism.

“I’m pretty sure I know, but you can’t let her know I told you.”

Sergeant Parks assured him, “We can keep this completely confidential. I won’t even ask you your name.”

“Okay. I work at a drive-in store, and she comes into the store a couple of times a week. Her name is Latricia, but I don’t know the last name. She’s almost always with another girl named Rachel Torrez. I know that name cause she uses a credit card to buy gas and other stuff.”

The only additional information he would give the sergeant was that he thought they lived together, and it was probably somewhere close to the 5000 block of Edleburg. Sergeant Parks correctly deduced that the address the caller mentioned was near the store where he worked. It made sense that they lived close to the convenience store where they bought gas, and he planned to find this mystery lady named Latricia. He discovered that there was only one Rachel Torrez listed within a one-mile radius of the store. 4320 Lynnhart was on the next street south of Edleburg.

Sergeant Parks drove to Rachel’s house, hoping he would get lucky. It was 2:15 on Thursday afternoon, and Rachel was at work as usual, but Latricia had not yet returned to her bartending job and was at home. He rang the doorbell, and after there was no response, he knocked hard on the door. Finally, an attractive woman came to the door and opened it to the extent of the security chain. Parks knew right away that he was face to face with Madame X. He held up a copy of the police drawing and said, “Hello Latricia, my name is Parks, Sergeant Douglas Parks with the Houston Police Department.” He showed her his badge with his other hand and asked, “May I come in and visit, or do I need to get an arrest warrant?”

“No, you don’t need to do that.” She released the chain and opened the door for him to enter.

“Did Willie turn me in?”

“No. Your friend wouldn’t even acknowledge that he had another accomplice.”

“Well then, how did you find me?”

“We have our ways. We’re professionals, you know.”

“I guess I’m going to jail, huh?

“Latricia, let’s talk. We could charge you with a misdemeanor as an accomplice to the burglary, which could get you a $4000 fine and
