Chapter Sixteen

For further insight into Kathleen O’Sullivan’s murder another trip to the library in Tullamore was needed, although two would need to remain at The Fitzgerald, guarding Conor.

“You’ve only the one car between you?” Dervla checked. “The Fiat?”

Ruby nodded.

“I’ve a Ford,” Dervla continued, “so I can take you, if you’d like? I know these lanes, so I’ll be quicker, and when we get there, I can help you search.”

Theo seemed to think this a good idea.

“If you don’t mind, Dervla, that’d be much appreciated. Ruby, is that okay with you?”

Again, Ruby nodded, partly anxious about being alone in the woman’s company, but partly willing it too. “That’s fine. So you three will stay here?”

“I might not,” Ness said. “I might take the Fiat and head back to the cottage.”

“What for?” enquired Theo.

“For more of a rummage,” Ness said, clearly not appreciating being quizzed too.

Theo shrugged. “Fine. Okay. Corinna and I will stay with Conor. Dervla, I don’t suppose we can head to the kitchen and make ourselves some food?”

“Help yourself,” Dervla said. “There’s some corned beef left. Oh, and more cheese.”

“Delightful,” Theo muttered, turning away to perhaps disguise how unimpressed she was with the prospect of eating either of them.

A plan in place, and Ruby all too aware that the day was slipping away, that night would soon descend, in that way it did out here, so insistently, she and Dervla grabbed their coats and hurried from the pub. Dervla’s car was parked at the back of the property. It was tired and old but roared into life readily enough, as if it knew the urgency of the situation.

As they drove, there was silence, Ruby wanting to say something, to apologise for the conversation Dervla may have overheard, where she’d made assumption after assumption about her life. The silence was so intense, though, that she couldn’t breach it, staring out of the window instead, at countryside more grey than emerald this day.

How long would they drive in silence? It was an hour or so to the library, perhaps less the way Dervla was driving, swinging the car round those narrow lanes, Ruby flinching a couple of times when she did that. She had to say something, anything; the silence was excruciating, even if it was only a thank you for offering to drive her to where she needed to be. The team being able to split up like this in the time they had left, was a huge help.

In the end, and with barely any journey time left, it was Dervla that spoke first.

“You’re married, you said?”

Ruby frowned, then looked down at her hands, realised how much she’d been playing with the ring on her left hand. “Yes,” she said.

“What’s his name again?”

“Cash,” Ruby answered.

“That’s it. It’s unusual.”

Ruby chanced a smile. “His brother’s called Presley. I think you can probably guess what musicians their mother was a fan of.”

“I see,” Dervla replied, unsmiling, her eyes remaining steadfastly on the road.

Ruby took a deep breath. “Look, Derv––”

“You have kids?”

The question was not asked gently, but rather fired at her.
