Daphni

I wake up and blink a few times, my eyes adjusting to the new setting and the hot breath on my neck.

“ZZ-Zzzzzz-hfffggh-pfeww-zzZZz”

My brow shoots up as I listen to the loud snoring coming from my bed. Propping myself up on my elbows, I find Shakira lying next to me, a small puddle of drool dripping from her mouth onto the soft sheets as she snores, deep in sleep.

I scoot away and slide out of the bed. I feel refreshed, but still a bit stiff. As I stretch, I let out a loud moan. The sound wakes Shakira, who upon discovering me up, jumps off the bed and circles my ankles, her tail wagging with excitement. I bend down and give her a good scratch.

“You know, thanks to your deceitful dad I spent the last few weeks hating you. But you are the sweetest little girl, aren’t you? Too bad your dad is evil!”

I let her give me a quick kiss on my nose before I head into the bathroom to freshen up. I dig my phone out of my pocket to find my phone dead. In the chaos of rushing back to to the house to grab the car, I had neglected to remember to bring my cell charger with me.

I spot a landline on the nightstand by the bed and dial Melissa’s number.

“Christ, Daphni. Are you okay?” Melissa asks, her voice laced with concern, after answering the phone and hearing my voice.

“Yeah, I’m fine, Mel. I’m sorry I didn’t call. It’s been a bit…crazy.”

“A bit crazy? Daphni, there’s paparazzi all over your house reporting about some break-in and knife fight? And now Drizzle’s manager called me, freaking out that you assaulted his client?" She lets out a long, frustrated groan. "At least Roman answers his phone!”

“You spoke with Roman?”

“Yeah, unlike you, he actually picks up my calls,” she huffs. “He spoke with Lawrence and Gabby, too. I know you live in your own special world, Daphni, but you do have people who care about you and worry about you!”

I cringe, feeling guilty as I hear how upset she sounds. “I know, Mel. I’m really sorry. My phone died and I fell asleep.”

“It’s okay. Roman was good and explained everything. He said that you were sleeping and that you’d been awake all night. He didn’t want to wake you up.”

“Well, that’s nice of him.”

“Well, he’s a nice guy, Daphni,” she says, letting her voice trail.

“Mel, don’t—”

“I’m not, Daphni. Don’t worry,” Melissa interrupts. “Listen, hang up and call your sister. She’s worried.”

I say a quick goodbye to Melissa before dialing my sister’s cell.

“Daphni!” Gabby shouts with relief when she recognizes my voice. “Where are you calling from?”

“Roman’s,” I answer. “My phone died and I’m kind of scared to think about all the messages waiting for me.”

“Screw it, then. Keep your phone off for a few days and disconnect. You deserve it.”

“Yeah, that’s actually not a terrible idea.”

“Well, we both know I’m the smarter one. Hold one a sec, Liam wants to say hi.
