Chapter 10

M ary couldn’t catch her breath. There were stairs, lots of stairs. She had to hurry. Molly was up there and she had to get her, and get her fast, because they were all in terrible danger. But the stairs wouldn’t end. They went on and on. Molly was up there, turning her scissors this way and that, cutting out a yellow hat, a rain slicker, boots. She folded the flaps and put the outfit on her paper doll.

And Mary climbed and climbed the stairs.It was hot outside and the sky was so blue. Molly wanted to go out to play, but she wasn’t allowed. She heard the train and she put her doll down on the little red table and ran to the window. She was high up here, so high. She could see the tops of trees.

Sugar maples, that’s what her daddy said they were. She knew all the names of the trees, or at least most of them. She wished her daddy would come take her away. She could see the river and the pretty sailboats, and the big iron bridge. She was scared the bad man was going to come and say mean things again, and she didn’t know why her grandfather would let that happen.

She missed her mommy even though she had trouble remembering what she looked like anymore. But she remembered what the bad man looked like.

The door. Mary finally reached the door. She gasped, panic shooting through her.

It was locked. She banged on it, hard. Banged and banged. Oh, God, she had to get in there and she had to hurry.

F.M. She needed Gideon’s F.M.

She called to Molly, but Molly couldn’t open the door. Why? She had to get to Molly. She was going to help Molly, and Molly was going to help her.

Below, she heard gunfire. Terror struck her heart. Gideon! Gideon was going to die! She had to hurry.

She found the breath to scream.
