Chapter 14

Justice stood at the window looking down into the busy Brooklyn Street. He could see the B12 bus running up and down the block and the small moving people scurrying across the street, dodging oncoming vehicles.

He’d been all over the world during his service as a Marine, but nothing ever felt as comfortable as being home in Brooklyn.

He remembered the first time he’d brought Bryan home on furlough to meet his father and grandmother. He’d known that no matter how much he loved Bryan, if he couldn’t make it beyond the elders in his clan, then their love was a nonstarter.

Bryan was a country boy, hadn’t stepped out of Small-town, Nowhere before his father signed him up for the Corps. Stepping out of a cab and onto the eclectic streets of Brooklyn had been culture shock to him. The girls jumping double-dutch in the streets, the boys kneeling down on the chalk-outlined sidewalk with their wax-filled milk bottle caps playing skelly, the fellas on the corner kicking it to loud hip-hop music, and the neighborhood hens sitting on the stoops watching everything on the block go down kept Bryan’s eyes wide with wonder as they climbed the steps to his family’s house.

It had all been like something out of a blaxploitation movie and Bryan had taken it all in one image at a time. From that moment on, he’d fallen in love with Brooklyn, promising that they would settle down here when they’d both retired from the service.

That memory seemed like it happened only seconds ago, not nearly the two decades that had passed. Justice stood there doing the math in his head, seventeen years in love with the same man, his one and only. Justice had known from that first glance that he would ride to the grave loving Bryan, he just hadn’t figured that the journey could come so soon.

It was odd, especially considering how they’d met and their career choices. Even though both of them faced real dangers performing their professional duties, Justice had never once thought they wouldn’t make it home to each other. He’d somehow known that they would grow old together. That was probably why he just couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that Bryan might not make it out of his hospital bed.

The doctors had told him there was no change. Bryan was breathing on his own now, the ugly ventilator a happily discarded memory, but he still wasn’t awake yet. He still wasn’t responding. They were hinting to Justice about making decisions regarding Bryan’s care and rehabilitation. They’d given up and wanted to put Bryan out to pasture in a long-term rehab center. He’d told them the only decision he would make is the one where Bryan lived and walked again on his own power and since then they’d left him alone.

Justice felt the shift in the air. “There’s been no change, Pops, you didn’t have to come all the way down here.”

“My sons are here, one of whom is fighting for his life, the other his heart.
