Book 12 - Hungry Dragons

The night before the annual offering, the peasants revolted. Melinda Harowalk watched the mayhem from the window of the castle tower, clutching her younger sister, Eleanora, against her chest. They had torches and bludgeons. Father's guards had deserted their posts and the peasants were ransacking the castle. She heard the shouting and mother's screams.

"What are they so angry about?" cried Eleanora.

"The offering," said Melinda. "They are tired of giving up their daughters."

The offering was a simple, if unsettling ritual. One the peasants of Nemarand had carried out for many decades to start the week of festivals called Dragon's Morrow. A single girl, pure of heart and body, was chosen by the priest to be offered to the red scaled dragon known as Myxus. She was given wine and tied down to await her fate atop the platform of offering.

Every year, a girl was plucked from the platform and taken screaming into the sky by Myxus. She was never seen again. The offering was made so that the beast did not set fire to the farmer's crops or devour the shepherd's flock. If an enemy approached the valley of Nemarand, Myxus would be there to drive them away. It was an understanding between frightened villagers and a mighty dragon that had lasted for more than 50 years.

But the peasants had enough. Their numbers were dwindling and they were furious at the drunken priest and the way neither Melinda's name nor Eleanora's name was ever drawn. Surely, they muttered, chance had to claim one of the two royal girls.

Footsteps pounded up the stairs and the door burst open under the weight of angry villagers. Melinda saw a confusion of fists and grimy faces, snarling with anger, hands reaching for her and her sister. She recognized some of the men. The tanner, the butcher's son, and even one of the guards now turned against the king and his daughters.

"Please! Stop this madness!" Melinda cried out and tried to shield Eleanora.

Melinda was willowy, fair-skinned, dark-haired and dark-eyed, traits she shared with her mother and owing, in some small part, to the traces of Rama blood in the beautiful queen. Melinda was grown to womanhood, but retained much of her youthful slenderness, as if her body had not yet fully ripened. Only her height betrayed that she was not still on the cusp. She wore a dark, modest dress that concealed what curves her body offered.

Eleanora, on the other hand, was buxom and comely, with braided blond hair that took after the king's great golden mane. She was just barely grown to a woman, but had acted one for some time and always had suitors.

Isaac, the cobbler, shoved Melinda aside. The princess cried out as Gren, the stout brewer, wrapped his big arms around Eleanora and dragged her towards the door. She screamed as Gren tore her ruffled bodice open and exposed her heaving breasts. He laughed and fondled her soft mounds. His fat fingers plucked at her pink nipples as she squealed in terror.
