Chapter 17

The closest town to Edgewood was called Farnborough. It was pitiful. I knew, as I’d travelled through it on the train, that it wouldn’t be anything close to what I was used to, but when Lucian finally parked the car on the ‘high street’ I found myself more unimpressed than I could ever imagine.

Lucian laughed as he caught sight of my face. “Give it a chance. Farnborough has a certain quiet beauty to it.”

“Quiet is right,” I muttered. “Whatever. Lead the way.”

“You wanna grab some food first?” Lucian asked, shoving his hands into his jean pockets and staring down the busy high street.

“Food?”

“Yeah, the stuff that sustains you.”

I had to really bite down on my lip to stop from retaliating. “Where did you have in mind?”

“There’s this nice little diner about five minutes away. We still have plenty of time before the lantern lighting. We’ll make it back in time.”

“Lead the way,” I said.

We walked next to each other but never touching. If I thought the car journey was weird, I hadn’t seen anything yet. It was almost five in the evening and dusk had begun to settle. The street lights burst to life and I had to admit, the town was beautiful in a tiny, vintage kind of way. Still couldn’t see myself doing any Christmas shopping here, though.

“Hey, when’s your birthday?” Lucian suddenly asked me.

“Twenty-fifth of January. Why?”

He didn’t answer at first. “Just wondering.”

It wasn’t until he’d brought it up that I realised I had less than two weeks until I turned seventeen. And if Lucian and Sophie were already driving, it meant they had turned seventeen before the school year started. I’d have definitely known if they’d had a birthday while lessons were on.

“When was yours?” I asked.

“September first.”

I’d been right.

We arrived at the diner quickly and Lucian held open the door for me, doing a very good job of acting like a gentleman. We sat ourselves at a booth and a young waitress practically ran over to hand us our menus.

“Can I get you anything to drink?” she asked, but she only spoke to Lucian.

“I’ll have water. Isla?”

“Coke.”

She nodded. “Okay, I’ll be back in a few moments to take your order. I’m Denny, by the way.”

Lucian grinned at her, and my whole stomach shot up, twisted and plummeted down. “Denny? That’s an unusual name.”

“My mother has a thing for unusual things.”

“That’s weird. So do I.”

Denny grinned, and I scowled behind my menu. I would not react, I would not react, I would not…

“What did you think of her?” Lucian asked, pushing down my menu so he could see my face. “She’s gotta be at least twenty, right?”

“She looks like the kind of person without morals, sense, or standards.” I paused, pretending to contemplate something. “Your type exactly, then!”

“Funny,” he said, swatting me with his menu.

Denny, the unusual, came back to take our orders. Lucian ordered a burger, and I grabbed the shrimp. I hoped my breath stunk of fish the entire journey back and made him feel sick.
