CHAPTER NINE
“IS THERE A MOLE IN THE WHITE HOUSE?” was the first headline Will saw at the newsstand he passed on Monday morning and his stomach turned. There was a fucking picture, the same that got blasted yesterday all over the news. The picture from Saturday morning, outside of Stevie’s place, Will and Stevie embracing each other before Stevie got into a cab.
I told you so, said the voice in his head, sounding startlingly like the voice of his informant. I warned you. And Will had thought he was ready, he’d been ready, he hadn’t cared when they questioned him almost from the minute the article came out. But he hadn’t expected this.
Which, in hindsight, Will could admit was a stupid thing to do. If it was obvious that they would go after him and it was obvious they would wonder who his informant was, it was not a stretch to connect the two. And Stevie was the perfect target.
Will had tried to call Stevie all day yesterday, but no luck. Stevie had texted him on Saturday that he was going to turn his phone off and they hadn’t had contact since. Will knew he would have to go to Stevie’s office and he knew it wasn’t going to be easy. There had been an unspoken ban last week after he’d dropped the story, he could only imagine what it would be like right now.
He had a taste of it at the door when Ruben, the guard who always smiled at him and wished him a good day, gave him a frown and “You may pass, Mister Newbrough” this time around.
Will got to the press area and ignored all the looks other journalists were giving him as he walked to his desk. He took a deep breath and a big gulp of his coffee and turned his computer on.
He checked the Washington Daily Tribune’s website first. He’d written a follow-up to his article yesterday to address some of the concerns that came up—excluding, of course, the informant issue—as well as some new findings, and that piece had been posted last night. It already had over two hundred comments, much more than usual, but probably at least half of them were about Stevie. A quick scan told Will his predictions were accurate, but there were still many threads discussing the actual issue. And for every two “Leak in the White House!” comments there was one that said “Don’t you see that’s just a smokescreen for a real issue?” Yes, thank you, Will thought.
“Quite a storm, huh?” Tessa said as she passed him to get to her seat.
“You could say that,” Will muttered. His e-mail inbox was overflowing and he wanted to delete everything without looking. He gritted his teeth.
“You know that means you struck the nerve, right?” Tessa told him, leaning on her elbows. “If their only defense was throwing shit at you and Stevie, they’re screwed. There’s an official investigation now, they’re going to pay.”
“You know who else is also going to pay? Stevie.
