What have I done?

I brought chaos into Bailey’s life and now she’s lying on the ground, fighting for her life. What kind of monster does something like that? Why didn’t she just get down? I had it under control.

Three dead Russians and she’s about to follow them. What a fuck up of a night.

“Bailey?” I call her name, squeezing the back of her neck. “Bailey, I need you to stay with me. Stay with me, alright?”

My heart’s thumping off-beat in my chest. Erik’s hanging over my shoulder and so are a few other people I don’t give a shit about. The only thing that matters right now is Bailey’s safety. She took a bullet for me, and I wish I’d taken it instead.

“Boss,” Erik leans close to my ear. “We need to get out of here. There are too many eyes and the cops are coming.”

To hell with the cops.

But Erik’s right, the first sirens break through the night air. The patrons of The Cattleman are pushing and fighting their way for the front door, trying to get out.

“You’ll keep an eye on her. Do you understand?” I stand, towering over the manager who stepped out of his office. He’s intimidated and shaking, but he gets a good look at my face. It’s dangerous, I know. I want him to see the fury in my eyes and understand my order isn’t negotiable.

“Y. . . Yes, sir,” he stutters, turning white as a bedsheet.

“Come on, we’ve gotta get out of here,” Erik says, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. With a hard tug, he pulls me away from my deep stare into the manager’s soul.

I stumble at first and then we join the crowd piling out of the front door. My interest in and intrigue towards Bailey are unfamiliar and difficult to comprehend. Casualties of war is what women usually are to me; but, if anything happens to that poor girl I’ll never be able to live with myself.

When we break out from The Cattlemen, and into the street, the stench of New York City fills my nose. There’s no fresh air to clear my lungs or thoughts, only the horrible, putrid stink of this decaying monument to man’s greed.

Erik and I start to run. We don’t stop until we’ve cleared two blocks, and we’re where Sam Marshall’s waiting to pick us up. We drive off into the night and all I can do is hope the healthcare system is competent enough to bring my Bailey back to me.
