“I have an emergency,” I complain into the phone as I hold it up to my ear with my shoulder. I’m mopping downstairs, but I just couldn’t push this conversation off. I have three and half freaking days until this charity gala.

I’m absolutely beside myself as I recall the night I had with Jonas. The way he treats me, before, during, and after sex, it’s something I don’t think I’ll ever get used to. But even with him showing a softer side of himself to me lately, I never imagined he’d actually invite me out to dinner, much less to some big event like this.

I don’t know what it’s supposed to mean, and I’m kind of flipping out.

Gina tuts into the phone. “Well, explain so I stop panicking. What’s going on?”

I stop mopping, resting my chin on the top of the handle while I grab my phone. “Jonas invited me to this charity gala thing this weekend, and I don’t have anything to wear, and I don’t think I can afford the kind of attire expected at these kinds of events,” I rattle off, shifting on my feet as a wave of shame hits me. It’s been a while since I felt so out of place in the world, but sure enough, with my rich and handsome boss bringing me out to this gala, I’m reliving old traumas.

Hilda and Hattie starting rumors at school so nobody wanted to ask me to dances. My stepmother taking my meager savings for the monthly food budget so I couldn’t get myself a dress the year I decided to go by myself. And then of course, the night of my senior prom, my last chance to do the whole big school dance thing. Gina and I met during junior year, and had grown really close by then, so she’d let me borrow her dress from the previous year. I hid it in my dresser, acted like I wasn’t planning on even attempting to go. But the night before prom, I came home from school and found it shredded on my bedroom floor.

I shudder at the horrible memories.

My friend sighs heavily, like she’s remembering those times too. “Come to my place after work tonight. I think I have just the thing for you,” she tells me, a note of sympathy lacing her words.

I catch a cab after my shift, rushing to Gina’s house across the city. When I arrive, she’s got pizza and wine sitting on the dining table.

“There she is,” Gina teases as she ushers me inside. “We’ve got food, drinks, and dresses, so don’t you worry. I’ll get you sorted out before the night is up.”

I laugh, hugging my friend tight before setting my jacket and purse on her table. “I’m starving,” I groan, sitting down and grabbing a greasy slice of pizza.

Gina joins me, grinning as she pours us each a large glass of white wine.

“What’s the face for?” I mumble as I chew, arching a brow and pointing at her wide smile.
