They arrived at their next destination for a repeat performance. Sheriff Jackson, wearing a sickeningly sweet smile, came to greet Eve a few minutes after she requested him. She didn’t mind ruining his false good mood. She explained why she was there.

“I don’t understand,” the sheriff said, his smile turning to a frown.

“Sheriff Murray kidnapped and almost killed me. He was assisted by a police officer who was part of your department. Law enforcement in this county is filled with corruption. It’s why I lead the task force.” She thrust out her hand holding the forms. “There are only a few questions, and it would be helpful if you could have your deputies fill out the information.”

Jackson took the paperwork. He read the top sheet. Name, rank, home address, and phone number were asked for. Then questions about corruption. As the sheriff’s eyes scanned the document, his cheeks turned pink, and then red. It was very similar to William’s response.

“You expect my deputies to answer these questions?”

“Yes,” she said.

“And if they don’t?”

“Judge Remki will become more involved at that point,” she promised.

His eyes widened as anger almost tipped him over the edge of his control. “You think one of my men had something to do with the body you found in the trunk of that car?” he demanded.

“This form has nothing to do with the dead body, but there’s a space at the bottom for general comments. If someone knows something that could help us, ask your men to put it in the comment section or call me directly,” she said.

His eyes glared into hers. Eve stood her ground.

“We’ll see about this,” he bellowed, and stormed away.

No one was near them and Clyde leaned in close to her.

“I guarantee he’s calling William Owens.”

“I won’t take that bet,” she said. “Let’s get out of here.”

Eve’s phone chimed. It was Tamm.
