Jacob couldn’t believe this was happening. The freaking director of the CIA was going to ask a State Department lawyer to run a spy op with a known terrorist financier. Viv was in way over her head, but the last thing he wanted to do was say it like that. She’d already been through so much, and he just wanted to protect her. But he feared this would be much too good for either director to pass up. Getting those detainees back in custody was priority number one. And Joubert most likely knew exactly where they were. So it was all an interconnected web, and Viv had an invaluable way in.

They settled back into their seats, except for Director Mince, who stood at the front of the room. “I talked this over with Lang, and, Vivian, we want you to do this, but we can’t force you. We’d like you to think about it overnight. Talk to Layla. Understand what this would entail, and then let us know tomorrow whether you are in or out. If you’re out, we will understand. You are a lawyer, not a trained operative, but we also know that you understand how important this mission is, and we believe that you have the skills and smarts to pull this off.”

Jacob hated that they were putting this on her. Making this her problem when really it wasn’t. The Agency had lost the guys to begin with. That was another issue he was annoyed about.

“Thank you. I’ll think about it and let you know.” There was determination in Viv’s hazel eyes. And that determination scared him, because he felt he already knew she wasn’t going to say no to this.

“Thank you, Vivian,” Director Phillips said. “If you decide you want to do this, I will talk to your boss at State to make sure he’s fully briefed. I’m sure he’s going to hate the idea, but let us deal with him if it comes to that.”

They spent the next hour going through additional photos of Al-Nidal members, including the two men who had escaped—Omar Hassan and Ali Abboud. From the briefing, they learned these two were even worse than he had imagined.

Jacob had one job. Make sure—no matter what happened—that Viv got out of this alive.
