In the forest, Everly was a little nervous as she stripped her clothes off, shivering violently in the snow, but her bear burst out of her, gracefully, with a joyous roar, flexing its muscles, and filling out into its new shape. She felt like she’d been shifting all her life. That she and her bear had always been two halves of one being. The snow was deep but soft and the four bears played in it, throwing it up into the air and tossing it all over each other as they bounded through the woods. When Heath and the kids raced ahead, Everly could barely distinguish them from the background. They were so beautiful and unique, she thought, and her heart swelled with pride as she caught them up, her own paws becoming invisible in the snow. She could hardly wait until she and Heath were formally mated, and everyone would know she was his and a part of his little clan. She was happier than she’d thought possible. But at the same time, something kept tugging at her thoughts, reminding her that not everyone was as fortune as she was. It had been there, buzzing in her mind for the past 24 hours, and wouldn’t let go, and as much as she wanted to bring it up with Heath, she wasn’t quite brave enough.
