The moon hung high in the night sky, casting a silver glow over the naked form of my husband beside me. I found myself intertwined with him, our bodies one. His touch was so familiar, sending a shiver of longing through my ethereal being. Our bodies moved in that age-old dance, and afterwards, as we lay together, I nestled against his chest, savoring the warmth that emanated from him. It felt so real, he felt so real—as if he were truly here beside me.

“Pippa, you must proceed with caution where this investigation is concerned,” he said as he held me and rubbed my hair absently. My head was on his chest, just beneath his chin.

“I have to see it through—I have no choice—I must clear Lady Ashmore’s name.” My voice was a strange mix of tenderness and trepidation.

“I would never think to deter you, my love, but I must encourage you to simply be careful. And try not to get on Stirling’s bad side.”

“I already am,” I grumbled, sighing as I wrapped my arms around Patrick and held him as tightly as I could. Truly, I never wanted to let him go. “I fear the inspector already dislikes me rather intensely.”

Patrick chuckled and reaching down, tipped my chin up. “That is untrue, my love. Yes, Stirling can be a difficult man at times, but he’s also fair and as honorable as they come.”

“Please, let’s not waste our time together speaking of that cantankerous man.” At hearing my own words, I couldn’t help but question the nature of this dream. Was it truly a connection between us, or just a figment of my restless imagination? And, furthermore, was I awake or was I dreaming? I didn’t feel as if I were dreaming and yet, what else could this be? A waking dream?

“As you please,” Patrick answered. Leaning down, his lips were warm on mine—warm and three-dimensional, real.

“My love,” I started, and my voice was tinged with uncertainty as I played with the wiry hairs on his chest. “Is this real? Or is it merely a construct of my own mind?” Even as the words left my mouth, I marveled at them—how could this be anything but real? I could feel him—the heat from his body, the solidity of his arm, his muscles, his flesh. I could smell him.

I looked up at him then, and saw that there was nothing ghostly or spectral about him. A smile played on his lips, and his eyes were sparkling like glitter with an otherworldly light.

“It is real, my Titania, my queen.”

“But how is it possible?” He was dead. I was alive.

“This dream realm we share is a sign of your burgeoning abilities, Pippa.”

“Dream realm?”

He nodded. “We’re in a place that exists between the realm of the living and the dead—a special haven for us both.”

“And you think I made this possible for us?” I frowned because I didn’t understand how that could be.

He nodded. “I don’t think so, my love, I know so.”

Confusion clouded my mind as I struggled to comprehend his words.
