Fi gently dabbed the cut above Dog’s left eyebrow. “I’m not sure what Pauline will make of this,” she said.

“Oh, she’ll laugh,” Dog said confidently

“That eye is going to be a real beauty by the morning. When did you say she was getting here?”

“In the morning.”

“What are you going to tell her?” I was examining the bruise on my own cheek in the surgery mirror.

“I’ll try the truth, I suppose.”

“Well, I’m sure that will give her a laugh.” Fi stood up, throwing a piece of cotton wool in the bin.

“As it will Alan when he sees the pair of us.” I tried a winning smile on my wife but she was having none of it.

“What is it they say about men never growing up?” She leaned over Dog’s eye again. “You’ll live, Dog. If he’d hit you again, you might’ve needed stitches. How are the knuckles?”

Dog clenched his fist, then released it. “Fine. I was an amateur boxer back in the day. You never really forget.”

“What are you talking about, man?” I turned away from the mirror. “You never got a punch in.”

“Ssh! I’ve got a reputation to preserve,” Dog smiled.

“Don’t you mean a reputation to save?” Fi looked at the pair of us and I felt like a naughty schoolboy in trouble with the teacher again. “Go on, the pair of you and keep out of trouble.”

We scuttled out of the surgery.

“Is she as angry with you as she looks?” Dog asked once outside.

“Oh, yes. I know exactly what she is thinking, two boys together up to no good. But wait till we get to the station. I expect we’ll get a fine reception.”

“And I thought it was a good idea to come and help you out.”

“But isn’t it good to be part of an investigation again?”

“I suppose so. By the way, who was the big fellow with the right hook?” “Kenny Breeze. I wouldn’t be surprised if he hasn’t got form. His brother, too. I’ll get Leverson to run a check when we get back.”
