Chapter 29

Robin gazed through the passenger window as trees and meadows flew by. It was a two-hour drive to Indianapolis, and she was already regretting riding with Nathaniel King. The day before, when he suggested picking her up, she’d been relieved. She didn’t particularly like to drive. It sounded like the meeting with the task force might take a few hours, which would mean driving back in the dark, which she positively hated.

But now she realized she would spend four hours with this cop she didn’t know. And with his music taste, which she found slightly offensive.

His playlist started well, with Leonard Cohen’s “Everybody Knows,” but the next song was by Ariana Grande. Then it was Ray Charles, followed by . . . something digital and high pitched. And then Jimi Hendrix, which Robin could get behind, and then a song titled “Mi Mi Mi,” which she definitely couldn’t.

“Okay, what is this?” she finally blurted.

“What?” Nathaniel glanced at her.

“The music is all over the place. What are we even listening to?”

“Oh, I’m sharing my playlist with my niece on Spotify. She’s ten. So it can be a mixed bag.”

“You can say that again.” Robin glanced at the next songs on the list. “Oh God, she has ‘Baby Shark’ here.”

Nathaniel waggled his eyebrows. “How do you know ‘Baby Shark’ isn’t one of my songs?”

Robin laughed. “Can we turn the music off?”

“Have it your way. But you’ll never hear James Brown warming up to Dua Lipa anywhere else.” Nathaniel switched it off.

“Thank you.”

They drove a minute in blissful silence.

“So I should probably prepare you for this meeting,” Nathaniel said. “There’s a task force that’s dedicated to investigating the Haley Parks case. Four state cops, two homicide detectives, and a fed. And there’s also a task force that’s investigating the Gloria Basset murder. And this is a meeting of both task forces.”

“Who’s in the Basset task force?”

“Well, there’s me.” Nathaniel paused for a second. “And that’s it.”

“Are you serious?”

“Extremely serious.” He frowned. “I was wondering about that. Why did you contact me? You thought you might have something connecting Basset and Parks. Why not contact the people investigating the Parks murder? Obviously, you realized they had more resources.”

“I, uh . . . tried,” Robin admitted. “They have a hotline. And when I called, they didn’t take me very seriously.”

“I’m not surprised. They get dozens of calls every day. Every true-crime podcast listener in this state is sure they would be the ones to solve the Haley Parks murder.”

“Yeah,” Robin said. “I barely got a few words out before the guy on the phone asked me point blank if I witnessed anything or if I have any concrete evidence. Which I didn’t.”

“So you called me next.”

“Well, it took me almost fifteen minutes. I called the IMPD, and they transferred me a bunch of times until I reached you.”

“That explains it.” Nathaniel exhaled. “Well anyway, with your help and some forensics, I managed to convince someone in the Parks task force that these murders might be connected.
