Chapter Fourteen

That plan lasted five minutes. Specifically, the five minutes it took us to slowly navigate the Exposition Park pathway maze around to the front of the museum, and its big, open lawn, during which time we discussed nothing more exotic than the view.

When we got out onto that lawn, the view suddenly got a lot more exotic. A girl in a purple rubber bodysuit with long, straight purple hair and purple eyes stepped in front of us. Not dull, dark purple like Tonika’s dress. Glaring violet that might glow in the dark and caught the eyes. The black metal crossbow slung over her back, as big as her torso, also caught the eyes.

Tonika and I must have been deeper in conversation than I thought to not see this girl coming, but now with her only ten feet away, it was too late to run.

The purple-haired girl leveled a finger at Tonika, arm straight, and said in a flat voice with an odd, scratchy edge, “You are a Pawn.”

Tonika did her jump and squeak. “Me? No!”

I took a half step forward, elbows out, trying to look tough. “No, that’s me.” It’s not like anyone could identify me as Magenta Slade.

Face as cold and stiff as ice, Purple Girl remained pointed resolutely at Tonika. “I tracked you from a local Tyrant facility.”

I gawked. Was every kid with super powers in LA waiting for a chance to hunt me down?

I still wasn’t letting Tonika get in trouble for me. Raising my voice, I growled, “No, I’m the Pawn. She’s a civilian bystander.”

Purple Girl didn’t budge, telling Tonika, “California belongs to Organism One. Tyrant will not be allowed to gain the upper hand in a new resource. You will come with me.”

Uh.

She said “Organism One.”

I knew who Organism One was. I’d better, he’d mind controlled me and everyone else in the city when I was, what, six? Tyrant wasn’t the only “take over the world” level supervillain with his own army. There were four of those big names. Tyrant. The Queen of Swords. Cossack. And Organism One, history’s greatest example of life created by mad science turning on its creator—and in this case, its creator’s entire species.

The threat level of my after-school job was skyrocketing. Having my friends hunting me was bad enough. And…by “new resources” Organism One meant teenagers, and was going to start with Tonika.

Not going to happen.

Stupid as it was, I grabbed Purple Girl’s shoulder. I actually got ahold of the paper-thin rubber, which felt unpleasantly chalky. Then she moved, faster than I could keep track of. A second later my back and head bounced off the thankfully soft sod, and Purple Girl had the point of a crossbow bolt pointed at my eye, a mere six inches away. Somewhere in that process, she yelled, “Ambush!”

More than human strength, more than human speed, and a weapon. Even dizzy, I felt the creeping chill of being wildly outmatched.

But Tonika wasn’t just wildly outmatched, she was innocent, so I repeated, “Me. I’m the Pawn.
