Chapter Ten
I brushed my teeth at the bathroom sink, ready to put the long day behind me.
âEden, where are you?â Alice called.
I poked my head through the bathroom doorway. âAlmost done.â I rinsed my mouth one more time and entered the bedroom. âWhereâve you been all day? I didnât see you.â
âAnd I donât see you now.â Alice drifted around the room, confusion etched across her faded features.
âOh, right. Because Iâm invisible.â I folded back the covers and climbed into bed.
âMay I ask why?â
âYou may ask, but I donât have an answer. Grandma thinks itâs a glitch. I might be back to normal tomorrow. Who knows?â I fluffed the pillow and made myself comfortable. I was grateful to be in a proper bed again and not on a mattress on the floor of my motherâs attic.
âA glitch?â Alice asked. âWhat does that mean?â
âThat my fury powers are acting up.â I tried to think of a comparison the ghost would understand. âLike a mechanical issue with a water mill. When the wheel turns but it doesnât move the water.â Or whatever water mills were supposed to do.
âIs that even possible?â
âItâs never happened before, but I donât see why not.â
Alice hovered at my bedside. âYou seem awfully relaxed about this.â
âIâm sure it will work itself out.â I yawned and closed my eyes. âMaybe I overdid it with training and a good nightâs sleep will do the trick.â
âAnd what if youâre wrong? What if someone triggered this glitch, as you call it, and it wonât go back to normal on its own?â
My eyes popped open. âWho would want to wreak havoc on my fury powers?â
Alice folded her arms and stared at the pillow. âMaybe they didnât mean for you to stay invisible. Or maybe they did, hoping it would result in more fury traits.â
I bolted upright in bed. âWait. You think my family did this to me?â The idea hadnât occurred to me, but the theory made sense. They had motive. They resented that I had the potential for so much power but refused to indulge it. The only way they could force me to embrace my nature would be to trigger more traits against my will.
Alice drifted to the foot of the bed, her hands clasped behind her. âI wouldnât put anything past them. You know that.â
âDid you overhear anything incriminating?â I asked.
Alice pursed her lips, thinking. âItâs possible, but I tend to ignore their conversations.â
âTeach me your ways, Obi-Wan.â
The ghost smiled. âMany years of practice.â Her pleasant expression faded. âI noticed a fresh grave in the backyard.â
âGrandma,â I said. âMom was quick on the draw this time.â
Alice released a gentle sigh. âThey take their mortality for granted.â
âLetâs just say they have entitlement issues.â I drew my knees to my chest, letting Aliceâs theory marinate. âHow long do they think I need to be invisible before another trait appears?â And how would they even determine that?
âIâm not sure. How has it worked the other times?â
I thought back to recent additions like my snake hair and the eternal flames in my eyes that signaled my immortality.
