“Did you pick a dress for homecoming?” Constance asks Marci as she stands by our lockers.

“I thought I did,” Marci says, “but now I don’t like it. I’m going to keep looking.”

Constance turns to me. “What about you?”

“I don’t think I’m going.”

“Why not? It’s still weeks away. Logan will be better by then.”

“Logan and I aren’t together anymore.”

“That’s not what he’s telling everyone.”

“He’s just confused with all the pain meds he’s on. Once they wear off, he’ll remember we broke up.”

“Why don’t you just get back together with him? You’re not seeing anyone else, are you?”

“No, but it doesn’t matter. Logan and I are over.” I shut my locker. “I need to get to class.”

As I’m walking down the hall, my mind wanders to Brett. I went to the club last night, hoping to see him, but he wasn’t there. I know we can’t date, but I still like talking to him. And looking at him. God, he’s hot. That sexy smile. Those dark eyes. Broad shoulders. And I love his deep voice.

“Yeah, just started,” someone says in a voice similar to the one I was just thinking about.

I glance to my right and see a guy going down the hall who looks just like Brett. I blink a few times, thinking I must be imagining this. I turn back to get a better look at him, but he went down the other hall.

I must be seeing things. Brett wouldn’t be at my school. So then who was that guy?

When I get to French class, I hear John, the guy in front of me, talking to Matt, who’s sitting next to him.

“You meet the new quarterback?” John asks.

“Not yet,” Matt says. “Why? Did you?”

“Only for a minute. We didn’t really talk.”

“What do you know about him?”

“Not much. I don’t think anyone does. Nobody’s ever heard of him.”

“They’re letting a nobody take Logan’s place?”

“They say the guy is really good, but how good could he be if nobody’s heard of him? Jack was telling me Coach Campbell could get fired if this guy doesn’t work out.”

“He’s risking his job for this guy?”

“That’s what I heard.” John lowers his voice. “Don’t go telling people this because I’m not sure if it’s true, but I heard Logan’s dad had a say in who they picked to replace Logan.”

Matt shrugs. “Then Campbell has nothing to worry about. Will Walker wouldn’t let this guy take Logan’s place unless he was really fucking good.”

“That’s what I was thinking.”

“What if he’s better than Logan?”

“He’s gonna lose his shit.

“I know, right? Some guy takes his place and plays better than him? And he has to just sit by and watch?”

“Logan’s already losing it. I went over there last night and he fucking went off on me. I just asked how he was doing and he fucking yelled at me. I let it go because I know he’s going through a rough time, but it’s not going to get any better. He still thinks he’s gonna finish the season.”

“Nobody told him the truth?”

“They did, but he doesn’t believe it.
