We snapped a bunch of pictures of the scene for our own investigation while we waited for the police to show up. Considering we were in the middle of nowhere, it took them a while. Then, after about a thousand questions and the typical Hollow Falls PD runaround, we were finally free to go.

I was dying to get home and shower, change into clean clothes, and rehash all the new possibilities Luca’s crime scene had just presented to us with my friends. I was dying to never see Darsi again. But it was still a little soon for that. Yes, Luca had attacked me. Yes, Darsi had betrayed me. But I hadn’t wished for anything like this. I knew I’d be seeing visions of Luca, strung up and head flopped forward, mouth gaping and blood seeping down the sides of his face, in nightmares to come.

I was used to it by now.

“Tig?” Darsi said, her voice echoing in the wide-open emptiness of the outdoors as we walked back toward her Airstream.

I paused. “Yeah?”

“I’m sorry.” She swallowed back a sob loudly, like it was a real effort. “You have no idea.”

I shrugged before looking at my friends and starting on my way again. But I didn’t bother to answer. What was there to say?

“What are you going to do now?”

“First things first,” I said. “We have to get a better look at that photo of Wyn’s mom.”

“But it’s gone,” Ella protested.

Wyn glanced at me. “Actually,” she said, “I think I have an idea about that.”
