Jessica knocked twice before pushing Miranda’s dressing room door open and stepping inside. She was surprised to see Miranda staring blankly at her mirror, unmoving with a makeup brush in her hand.

Concerned, she made her way behind the older woman to kneel beside her. “Miranda, honey?” Jessica asked tentatively, placing her hands on the other woman’s knees.

Miranda jumped in response, as though just realizing the younger woman was there, the makeup brush clattering on the vanity as it fell from her grasp. “Oh, Jessica, dear! You scared me!” she forced a laugh before her gaze drifted to the vanity and her array of makeup.

“Sweetie, are you okay?” Jessica asked, shaking Miranda lightly. When the older woman didn’t respond, she turned the revolving chair so Miranda faced her before shaking her lightly again. “Miranda!”

Again, Miranda looked startled, jumping slightly. “Jessica, honey! What is it? What do you need, hun?” She didn’t look away this time, though, instead her doe eyes locked with Jessica’s hazel ones.

“Miranda, are you okay? What’s wro-”

“Nothing, dear. I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be?” Miranda interrupted, breaking eye contact to reach back to her vanity and fiddle nervously with a tube of lipstick.

“You’re lying. What’s going on? Are you okay? Did he hurt you again, Miranda?” Jessica gently pulled the older woman’s chin to make her look her in the eye. She saw tears in Miranda’s rich, brown eyes. “Honey, what is wrong?”

Miranda responded by wrapping her arms around Jessica’s neck and burying her face in the soft, brunette curls that cascaded around the girl’s shoulders, a whimper escaping her lips.

“It’s okay, honey, it’s okay. Just… Baby, tell me what’s wrong!” Jessica pleaded, hugging the other woman closely and rubbing her back.

“I think I did a bad thing,” Miranda whispered, hot tears spilling from her eyes and into the younger woman’s dark tresses. “I’m sorry! I-I didn’t mean to!”

“Shhh… It’s okay. I won’t be mad, Miranda. What happened? Just tell me, honey!” Jessica cooed, pulling Miranda tighter against her. She could feel the other woman’s heart beating frantically against her own chest. “Just tell me what happened.”

“I had sex with Kyle last night. I just- I don’t know-I didn’t-I’m sorry!” she sobbed against Jessica’s thin frame, pulling the girl closer as though she were afraid she would try to escape.

“Shhh, honey, it’s okay. I’m not mad, baby. Everything’s okay as long as he didn’t hurt you,” Jessica sighed, relieved it wasn’t something worse.

The implication went over her head, the older woman focused on the stab of his cutting words, “He did, though, Jessica, but I didn’t let him know. And he didn’t even remember that night! He didn’t remember what he did to me, all the marks he left on me. And he just-he felt so bad when he saw all my bruises. I thought maybe I could forget what happened, you know? I thought I could pretend it never happened, but I couldn’t,” Miranda cried, her face still buried in Jessica’s curls. “Everything reminded me of that
