SUMMARY

The most important thing about PBA is clear communication. You should make sure you clearly communicate what you want to accomplish with a PBA so that students keep that at the forefront of their decisions as they align their PBAs to the learning objectives.

You also need to communicate the expectations of the project. This can be done in a number of ways but syllabi, contracts, or rubrics are a good means because not only do they inform the students, but parents can be made aware of what is expected as well. Communicating to students what a good assessment looks like through modeling can go a long way. When students get to experience the PBA, they gain a better understanding of it. Communicating what you expect when it comes to the quality of the work is essential. This can be done by showing them examples of excellent assessments and not-so-excellent ones and by linking them to real-world examples.

The final strategy that will help to teach your students the importance of PBA is encouraging students to practice. When this is communicated to students, they will give the final assessment more weight. Be sure you do not overcommunicate, though, and provide students the space to be able to complete their PBAs without you getting in the way of their creativity.
