“Here we are,” Jenny began, listening to the key turning in the lock. “Home sweet home.”
Annabel followed her in, adjusting to the brightness as the lights leaped into action. The door opened into a small hallway, with the bathroom off to the right, the kitchen to the left and the lounge straight in front. It was only small but it was clean and very welcoming. The walls in the lounge were painted magnolia, with a dark beige carpet. A small television rested on a table in the far left corner, a single brown chair next to it, with a brown two seater settee pushed up against the opposite wall.
“What do you think?”
“I love it. It’s perfect for the two of us.”
“There’s not much cutlery but there are a few plates, knives, forks and pans. It’s not enough for a big family but ample for you and Oscar.”
“It’s absolutely fine. Brian is so generous.”
“Yeah. He’s a good guy. Why don’t you get your things put away? Check out the bedrooms, there’s only two by the way, and I’ll call by with a take away and a bottle of vino in about an hour.”
“I can’t thank you enough Jenny for your kindness.”
“It feels good being able to help someone. I’ve never been a bad person but I’ve never really helped anyone out like this before. It’s got me thinking.”
“What about?”
“The work Claire and the others do at the refuge.”
“They are amazing people.”
“I’d like to make a difference to people’s lives one day.”
“They deserve a medal.”
“They certainly do. Without them I’d probably be...”
Jenny didn’t finish her sentence. She didn’t need to. Annabel could tell by the tears brimming in her eyes she still held painful scars.
“Hey, come on.” Although she’d only known Jenny for less than an hour, she felt she’d known her longer. Putting an arm around her small shoulders, Annabel knew it was her turn to offer some help. “It’s okay. I’m here for you as much as you are here for me.”
“I know,” she whispered, wiping away the tears which had managed to escape. “Sorry, it’s just...hard at times. I know I should be strong.”
“You are strong. You’re amazing Jenny.”
“I don’t know about that.”
“You are. You’ve helped me in such a way you’ll probably never ever realise and I owe you.”
“Thank you.” Taking a tissue from her pocket, Jenny wiped her eyes, blowing her nose before adding, “I’ll see you in about an hour then.”
“Okay. See you soon.”
