âHey, wake up in there. Time to get up, sleepyhead.â
Nora sat up in bed. Pounding accompanied the annoyingly cheerful sound of Tammyâs voice. How could she be so lively after so little sleep? Morning light shone through the bedroom window. Why hadnât Jeannie awakened her? After her midnight adventure, Sadie had started crying before she could lie down again. At least Nora had time to put her nightgown back on. She and Jeannie had taken turns with the cranky baby. The little one had a tummy ache. Jeannie was no longer allowed to eat moose chili.
Nora rubbed her eyes. More pounding. âJah, jah, I hear you. Come in, come in.â
Tammy didnât need any more encouragement. She threw open the door so hard it knocked against the back wall. âWhy are you still in bed? Mammi is making breakfast. Jeannie is feeding the bopli.â
âWhy didnât they wake me?â
âJeannie said you were up half the night rocking Sadie. I take it she didnât know about you sneaking out of the house?â
âI didnât sneak out. I walked out.â Nora slid from the bed and padded to the row of dresses hanging on hooks on the far wall. âBut nee, she doesnât know.â
âWhatever you say.â Tammy sprawled across the bed. âHurry. Daadi said to give you a message.â
A message from Grandpa.
Driving. Today was the day she would drive a car. Nora shimmied from her nightgown and threw her dress over her head. âI have chores to do. Mammi said something about a frolic.â
âDaadi thought you would be excited about this. What is it?â
âDaadi offered to give me a driving lesson, thatâs all.â
âWhoop-de-do.â Tammy giggled. âI already know how to drive. I just donât have a car, and Daed wonât buy me one. He says I have to save up for it.â
âI donât know how, and Iâll never have a car. Daadi called it a get-out-of-jail-free card.â
âBy all means then, letâs roll.â
How did Grandpa plan to pull this off? What about Daryl? What about Jeannie? If Nora had to hide it, she shouldnât be doing it. She tried to ignore the clanging bell in her head. It was one lesson, nothing more. Scratch the itch and move on. âOne time. Thatâs it.â
âUnderstood.â Tammy jumped up, grabbed Noraâs arm, and propelled her from the room. âOr maybe youâll change your mind and decide you want to drive. Youâll decide to stay here with me.â
âNee, I promise you, thatâs not happening.â
âMillions of peopleâeven Christiansâall across the world drive cars. It doesnât mean theyâll go to hell. If they intentionally run over a guy and kill him, then maybe. But even then, if they repent and ask to be forgiven, they can still go to heaven.â
âThose people arenât Amish. Let it go, Kossin.â
Tammy kept making her argument as they ran down the stairs.
âOkay, okay, I get it.â Nora tugged her arm free. âYou make our Ordnung sound silly. Itâs not. I respect your beliefs. Do the same for me.â
Jeannie looked up from the rocking chair where she sat feeding Sadie.
