“Hey, wake up in there. Time to get up, sleepyhead.”

Nora sat up in bed. Pounding accompanied the annoyingly cheerful sound of Tammy’s voice. How could she be so lively after so little sleep? Morning light shone through the bedroom window. Why hadn’t Jeannie awakened her? After her midnight adventure, Sadie had started crying before she could lie down again. At least Nora had time to put her nightgown back on. She and Jeannie had taken turns with the cranky baby. The little one had a tummy ache. Jeannie was no longer allowed to eat moose chili.

Nora rubbed her eyes. More pounding. “Jah, jah, I hear you. Come in, come in.”

Tammy didn’t need any more encouragement. She threw open the door so hard it knocked against the back wall. “Why are you still in bed? Mammi is making breakfast. Jeannie is feeding the bopli.”

“Why didn’t they wake me?”

“Jeannie said you were up half the night rocking Sadie. I take it she didn’t know about you sneaking out of the house?”

“I didn’t sneak out. I walked out.” Nora slid from the bed and padded to the row of dresses hanging on hooks on the far wall. “But nee, she doesn’t know.”

“Whatever you say.” Tammy sprawled across the bed. “Hurry. Daadi said to give you a message.”

A message from Grandpa.

Driving. Today was the day she would drive a car. Nora shimmied from her nightgown and threw her dress over her head. “I have chores to do. Mammi said something about a frolic.”

“Daadi thought you would be excited about this. What is it?”

“Daadi offered to give me a driving lesson, that’s all.”

“Whoop-de-do.” Tammy giggled. “I already know how to drive. I just don’t have a car, and Daed won’t buy me one. He says I have to save up for it.”

“I don’t know how, and I’ll never have a car. Daadi called it a get-out-of-jail-free card.”

“By all means then, let’s roll.”

How did Grandpa plan to pull this off? What about Daryl? What about Jeannie? If Nora had to hide it, she shouldn’t be doing it. She tried to ignore the clanging bell in her head. It was one lesson, nothing more. Scratch the itch and move on. “One time. That’s it.”

“Understood.” Tammy jumped up, grabbed Nora’s arm, and propelled her from the room. “Or maybe you’ll change your mind and decide you want to drive. You’ll decide to stay here with me.”

“Nee, I promise you, that’s not happening.”

“Millions of people—even Christians—all across the world drive cars. It doesn’t mean they’ll go to hell. If they intentionally run over a guy and kill him, then maybe. But even then, if they repent and ask to be forgiven, they can still go to heaven.”

“Those people aren’t Amish. Let it go, Kossin.”

Tammy kept making her argument as they ran down the stairs.

“Okay, okay, I get it.” Nora tugged her arm free. “You make our Ordnung sound silly. It’s not. I respect your beliefs. Do the same for me.”

Jeannie looked up from the rocking chair where she sat feeding Sadie.
