JACK’S ALARM BUZZED on his phone. He searched with a hand at his right side. When his fingers did not come across it in the usual location he sighed and opened his eyes. The surroundings were unfamiliar at first. A large movie poster filled his line of sight and ignited slight recognition. Upon further inspection, he deduced it had hung in Ned’s old office years back. He knew this because of the autographed dedication by the film’s star to “Mr. Burns.” He had stared at it for years in various locations that Ned called his work space. But now, it was in Ned’s guest room.

Hell of a late night. Jack groaned. He found his phone under a pillow and silenced the annoying alarm. 6:00 a.m. The drink and company had made the previous evening a whirlwind of activity with mishmashes of details. A slideshow of tableaus clicked in rapid succession in his mind. He remembered talking to the producer Lauren Hargrave at the beginning of the party. She had ducked out soon after, but the overall takeaway from their conversation had been promising. He swiped through his contacts on his phone and smiled when he came across her name and phone number. Must not have scared her away from any future discussions.

There had been more drinks with Ned and Jessica, a jazz player, some up-and-coming fashion designer, and various oddballs that screamed East Coast. Daniel had looked like a puzzle piece mistakenly mixed into the wrong box at first, from what Jack could remember. He thought he recalled Daniel encircled by a band of misfits at another point in the evening, laughing long and deep.

Jack willed his body off the bed. Unwelcome creaks accompanied the stretching of his back. He trudged his way out of the bedroom. Daniel’s figure slumped over the marble island in Ned’s kitchen. Daniel clutched a large mug of coffee. Puffy lids and dark bags were the result of Daniel’s late night. All Daniel could do was grunt in greeting.

Jack poured himself a cup of coffee. They drank in silence around the island for a couple minutes. “You okay?” Jack finally managed to ask.

A millimeter of a shrug was Daniel’s response.

“I’ll start the first part of the drive. We should get going.” Jack pulled out his phone and glanced at the time again. “I’ll text Ned later.”

Daniel pointed to the front door. “He was out the door by five thirty. Screeching of his blender woke me up. He told me he’d be heading out for his run and then straight to the office. We could let ourselves out.” Daniel rubbed his temples. “Jesus, what a night. I must be turning into a lightweight. Can’t remember half of it. It’s been forever since I’ve had this bad of a hangover.” He groaned. “Don’t miss it.”

Jack managed a slight smile. “Well, you got to experience a little bit of New York and what it’s like in the entertainment business. What’s the verdict?”

“I can’t wait to get back home to my wife.
