Chapter 22

HIM

Parking is always a hassle in the center of the city. I found a spot underground and walked up to the surface two blocks south of the Toronto General Hospital. The time on my wrist says that Jasmyne’s mother should be arriving at the hospital soon.

She gave up her daughter last night so fast it was hilarious. Some people can’t stand the sight of pain—well, her boyfriend’s pain. Jasmyne’s mother was banking on the authorities protecting her daughter when our crew attacked.

I stroll up University Avenue like I don’t have a care in the world, my baseball cap pulled low and my button-up shirt done up to the top. My baton is in the car because I have pepper spray and my fists. It’s hot today, so I’m doubly glad I’m wearing the hat.

Oh, and I have a sharp switchblade for the supple flesh of Sadie’s neck if I can get that close to her.

The tower of the Peter Munk Building at the Toronto General Hospital rises on my right. I’ve sent so many people here in the past that I know the ICU is on the tenth floor.

My first was several years ago when I moved here from Montreal. A street fight that ended with a brutal head stomping. I’ve never seen so many teeth break in one person’s mouth as the day I laid the guy down on his stomach, his mouth open on the edge of the curb like he was trying to chew it. When I stomped on the back of his head, slamming his mouth forward, it snapped off the guy’s jaw, split the skin across both cheeks and ripped out more than half his teeth.

I thought I’d killed the guy that day, but nope. He recovered for many months and eventually learned how to eat and talk again. Last I heard, he lives in Brazil or some shit.

I turn to the right, meander around a van, lowering a ramp for some punk in a wheelchair, and enter the Robert R. McEwen Atrium.

The hospital is quite busy today, which works for me. I can be in and out without a single soul taking a good look at me.

I stroll through the lobby and board the elevator. On the tenth floor, I walk the corridor like I belong, searching for the ICU sign. Was it left of the elevator or to the right?

Then I spot it. There’s a police officer in uniform guarding the entrance. The asshole is sitting on a chair outside a door that leads to another group of rooms—the entire ICU area.

I need one minute inside there.

One minute to slice Sadie’s throat.

I have to make sure she can’t talk to anyone.

Talk? Oh, that’s rich because she can’t actually talk to anyone.

A short chuckle escapes me before I can contain it, and the cop looks up from his phone as I ease past him. He watches me for too long. I feel his eyes on me until the end of the corridor when I turn into an empty room.
