CHAPTER 10

“Okay, people I think we got our shot! Thank you for all your hard work! Now let’s wrap it up!” The sunburnt photographer shouted over the whistles and applause in a broad Australian accent. After a few celebratory hugs and high-fives, the rest of the crew started to pack up and disperse, Kyra included.

Thanks to the right connections, what began as a budding fashion career seemingly blossomed overnight. It was dark when she left the house that morning and it would be dark when she returned, but with so much to consider like color, texture, cut, and fit, the long hours on location went by quick. She didn’t even realize how tired she was until she was asked to snap a few selfies with the hair and makeup team. They had to do three takes before they got one without her yawning.

“Hey, thanks again for your help today. Honey, you slay!” Dakota rushed up to her, still wearing the barely-there bikini she picked out. The second she came out the water, one of her assistants draped a towel over her shoulders like a cape.

“I could say the same for you,” Kyra carried her smile a little further. “Thank you so much for thinkin’ of me. It was an honor to work with you.” Their hug was left open thanks to the plastic-covered garments dangling over her arm.

“I have to agree. We work well together.” Dakota stalled the climb to her trailer.

“And your photos came out great! I bet the calendar is goin’ to look amazin’ when it’s done. I’m goin’ to make sure all my family and friends get one.”

“Ah, yes, I’m sure Lucas would be proud,” Dakota sighed as she raked her towel over her jet black hair. A few twists and tucks later, she wrapped it like a turban.

“I hope he feels better. Food poisonin’ is not fun,” she cringed.

“Don’t tell anyone I said this, but if it was up to me, you would have his job by tomorrow,” Dakota stepped down so her mouth was level with Kyra’s ear. “I still can’t believe he got food poisoning the night before the shoot. I mean, who does that?” Her eye roll implied he made himself sick on purpose.

“Anyway, I’ll let you go. I can see that you’re tired. Go home and get some rest.”

“Thanks. Have a safe trip back to L.A.” Kyra took her suggestion on the go.

“You know, I really like your style, Kyra. If you’re ever looking to get out of here, give me a call.” Dakota left the door open a little longer. Not only was her smirk intriguing, her invitation weighed so heavy on her mind, Kyra almost forgot where she parked her car.

Drawn in by its sleek silver finish, it was going to take awhile for her to get used to driving Justin’s beloved Aston Martin. Balancing a cup containing the last few drops of cold coffee, as well as her cell phone in one hand, it took forever to fish the key from the bottom of her tan Celine.
