Chapter 17

Thursday, August 20

I sipped my coffee and looked out the window. Papers covered the makeshift desk before me in my hotel room. Since Sunday night, we’d positively identified our deceased woman found outside of Grand Forks as Megan Tuitt from Fargo. Her last known address was that of her sister, who positively identified the remains via a couple of the scars on the body. After further confirming the ID through a familial DNA match, we were left with no doubt about her identity. Yet even with that confirmation, we hadn’t gotten any closer to finding the person responsible for her death. We’d spent all week pounding the pavement. We’d knocked on doors, we’d watched video, we’d stopped at local businesses, and we’d talked to everyone moving in a couple-mile radius around Megan Tuitt’s neighborhood. Not a single person knew anything. I was at a loss on how to move forward. From all appearances, it looked like we were reaching another dead end.

My phone vibrated on the nightstand beside my hotel room bed. I got up, walked over, and swiped the screen to answer. “Hey, babe.”

“Hey, yourself. What’s up?” Karen asked.

“Nothing. Having a coffee. Looking over a file that I’ve been over a million times now.”

“Nothing new, eh?” Karen asked.

“It’s not looking like it. I’m going to talk to Beth and Ball and see what the consensus is on coming home.”

“At that point already?”

“Unfortunately. We’ve just got nothing.”

“Well, I know how you don’t like to leave things unfinished, but you can only do so much. The pups and I will be happy to have you home.”

“How have they been?”

“Fat and lazy,” Karen said. “And slobbery. Can’t forget slobbery.”

The thought of the two made me smile. I’d never really been a pet person, but since getting Porkchop and adding Bacon, I couldn’t imagine our house without them.

“What’s your plan for today?” Karen asked. “Or what’s the plan until you figure out if you’re coming back or not?”

“I don’t know. Probably head to the field office over here and—” My other line beeped in. I took my phone from my ear and looked at the screen. “Hey, Ball is beeping in. Let me see what’s up.”

“Okay. Call me back.”

“I will. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

I clicked over to Ball. “Morning.”

“Pack your bags.”

“What’s going on?”

“We just got a pair in Wisconsin.”

“A pair?”

“Found together. Yesterday afternoon. Your guy’s MO. The resident agency in Eau Claire just got the call about a half hour ago. Maybe less.”

I switched my phone onto Speaker and set it down on the desk as I shuffled through the papers on the investigation. After finding what I was looking for, I ran my finger across the map showing circled areas where we’d found bodies. “He’s following the same route. We had a body near Eau Claire on our last go-round with this guy. And if we had North Dakota and now we’re into Wisconsin—” I ran my finger down the highway. “He’s heading toward Chicago.”

“We had bodies in Chicago before, correct?” Ball asked.
