The night was closing in as Darren pulled into the parking lot of The Wolfpack. Paul had dropped him off at home so he could grab a change of clothes, and they’d decided to use separate cars, since Paul had to head straight out after the meeting. He’d been distant on the drive to Darren’s place, and it had Darren worried.

When he pulled into the spot next to his car, though, Paul was back to his usual smiling self.

“Ready?” he said as he jumped down from his cab.

“As ready as I’ll ever be.”

Paul took Darren’s hand and squeezed. “Relax. It’s just a friendly chat. Nothing more.”

“Promise?”

He smiled. “Promise.”

Darren nodded and took a deep breath, then headed to the door.

The throb of music could be heard from the back rooms of the club, but Darren wasn’t in a dancing mood. Avani appeared a moment after they closed the fire exit—blocking off Darren’s escape—and she led them into the club, then up a flight of stairs to a small office. The door was frosted glass, and Darren could make out a large shape in the room. Ethan.

Avani knocked, and a deep voice came from the office, telling them to come in. Paul squeezed Darren’s hand again and smiled, then headed on inside.

Ethan was sat behind the small wooden desk, a folder of papers open in front of him. As the door closed behind the three, he looked up and smiled wide.

“Paul, nice to see you. And you must be Darren.”

Darren stepped forward and shook the proffered hand, relaxing as the big man smiled once more. “Nice to meet you, uh…Sorry, I only know your first name.”

“And that’s all you need.” Ethan sat again and gestured to the two chairs on the other side. “Take a seat. Avani can stand.”

“Or Avani can sit on your desk,” she said as she did so. “Avani has been on her feet all damn day.”

Paul laughed and took up the remaining chair beside Darren. “How’s business?” he said, nodding to the papers.

“Good for the time of year.” Ethan moved the folder to a drawer. “Conor’s a lifesaver when it comes to keeping track of the outgoings and all that.”

“Good in the sack, too, from what I hear,” Avani said with a smirk.

“Anyway,” Ethan said loudly over Paul’s laugh. “That’s not what we’re here about tonight.”

Darren swallowed. Suddenly he was the center of attention. “A–Aren’t there supposed to be more coming?”

“Nope.” Avani shrugged. “Not many have been turned lately, I guess. Just you, cutie.”

“Speaking of that,” Ethan said. “Paul informs me that you were turned overseas by an old Were and against your will. Is that right?”

“Yes.” Darren quickly went over the little he knew. “I didn’t realize what I’d become until I got home.”

Ethan nodded. “If the Were had been local, we could have done something about it. I’ll try reaching out to the packs in that area, though I doubt anything will come of it.”

“Thank you. I’m happy with the way I am, but I’d have preferred to be asked.
