OA IN GUADALAJARA AND AJIJIC, MEXICO
THIS IS THE STORY OF OVEREATERS ANONYMOUS IN GUADALAJARA, THE SECOND LARGEST CITY IN THE STATE OF JALISCO, MEXICO, AND ITS SISTER MEETINGS IN AJIJIC, A FISHING VILLAGE LOCATED ON LAGO CHAPALA, MEXICOâS LARGEST FRESHWATER LAKE.
My recovery started when I attended my first OA meeting in Plano, Texas, in 1981. In 1989 I moved to Oklahoma, then retired in 1997, and moved to Mexico. I knew there were Twelve Step meetings in my area but no OA meetings. After two years with just emails and calls to my sponsor, I started a weekly OA meeting. I registered the meeting with the World Service Office, placed flyers on bulletin boards in two small towns, and put ads in the local papers. We held the first meeting in November 1999, with six women in attendance.
This is a vacation and retirement community, and people come and go. We have quite a few part-time residents from the United States. These snowbirds are in OA in other parts of the US and Canada, which brings new insights to our meetings. Originally we had only one meeting a week until a member insisted on having two meetings; the second meeting starting in 2001. Attendance ranged from three to six OA members, with the largest attendance being twelve.
Many times I was the only one at meetings. I kept asking my HP for guidance and to send people if the meetings were to continue. Doing this service has kept me abstinent. Today I am thankful to say that several OA members have chosen to move here year-round. We now have a core group to continue the meetings.
I am grateful to my HP and to OA for my recovery and for helping me learn to live life on lifeâs terms without excess food. My life truly is happy, joyous, and free.
