Ethan: "Headed to the hotel in a few. Can call in 20-30 min. Will you be up?"

I was still reading it when a second text came in.

Ethan: "It's Ethan."

I smiled when I read it and the expression stayed on my face the whole time I was texting him back.

Me: "Hi, Ethan. That's fine. I'm up."

Ethan: "Talk to you soon."

I sent back a thumbs up and a star.

I regretted not sending a heart with them, but I wasn't going to send a second text to add it. I set my phone next to me to wait for his call.

It was 12:22 exactly when my phone rang. My heart started pounding the instant I saw his name on the screen.

Ethan. I could see his face in my mind. I could remember all the warm feelings I felt when I was around him.

"Hello?" I tried to sound like myself even though I felt like I was standing outside my own skin, watching some stranger have this conversation.

"Hey," he said.

"Hey."

"How are you?" he asked.

"I'm good. I'm just sitting here, reading."

"I'm trying to imagine it," he said. "You gotta give me more to go on. Are you on a couch? At a desk?" His voice and his words sent a thrill through me. I thought about my appearance, looking down at my clothes. "Shower taken, contacts out, glasses on," I said. "P.J.'s, too. Plaid, flannel pants, light blue, with an old pink t-shirt from a marathon I went to my sophomore year of college. I did not run the marathon—I just worked the check-in table. No socks. Legs under the blanket, sitting up with three pillows behind my back. Lamp on. Bottled water and half-eaten Hershey bar on the table next to me. Super comfortable."

He was silent for a few seconds after I finished.

I almost said something else, but he spoke again. "Hair," he said. "What's your hair look like? Is it up or down?"

"Down. But not fancy-down. It's just tucked behind my ears."

"You're way, way more comfortable than I am right now," Ethan said. "I just walked into my hotel room about two seconds ago. I haven't even taken off my shoes yet. I'm sitting on the edge of my bed, but I just barely made it here. I was still standing when you first picked up the phone. I literally just walked in."

I imagined Ethan wearing that same outfit he had on earlier, but I smiled when it hit me that he called as soon as he could.

"Are you reading about the California red-shouldered hawk?" he asked.

"No, but I'm pretty impressed you remembered that."

"What are you reading?"

I glanced at my iPad. I was reading an ebook. It was a straight-up romance novel—one of the regency ones. A Winter with Miss Winterbourne.

I was not about to say that to him.

"Chick stuff," I said. "Fluff. Feel good reading. Not that birds don't make me feel good, but… you know."

"Not as good as Mister Darcy," he said.

I grinned even though he couldn't see me. "Yeah, not quite.
