Chapter Eight

Genie was due any minute to pick him up for the meet with Agent Christopher Hammer, and Andrew was officially out of things to do. He’d installed the television and hooked up the cable with free limitless channels, of course.

The computer was set up and the highest speed Wi-Fi connection available throughout the house and he’d even managed to configure an adapter for the garden out of bits and pieces he’d found on his scavenger hunt around Teddy’s home.

The only thing he hadn’t done was go through Teddy’s computer files, because his conscience drew the line there, considering all the private information he kept on his own computer.

Almost everything electrical could now be run from a reconfigured universal remote he’d found and rewired.

He got bored quickly.

Whether Teddy would actually appreciate his meddling was yet to be seen. But he wouldn’t have long to wait since the man in question was due home in a few hours.

There was that pesky use of the word ‘home’ again. This wasn’t his home and he needed to remember that.

Bouncing his leg, Andrew tried not to keep checking the clock. Perhaps he had time to look through the computer after all. It sat on the old desk by the bay window, looking at him. His fingers twitched with the very powerful temptation.

Saved by the bell.

The old-fashioned bing-bong of the doorbell rang through the house and he shot up off the worn leather sofa to answer it. When he opened the door, he expected to see Genie waiting there impatiently and ready to jump on him with a million questions.

“Hi, Ge—”

Instead, he came face-to-face with a man dressed in jeans and a casual cotton shirt. The man wasn’t overly tall but something about the way he stood with a pinched expression on his face urged Andrew to gulp and step back. This man was dangerous.

“Chris, stop scaring my brother with your crazy-person look.” Genie’s voice came from somewhere behind the stranger. Elbowing the man out of the way, Andrew’s sister came forward and drew him into a hug.

“Sorry for last night. I swear I had no idea what was going on between you and Theo,” she apologized.

When he pulled back to give her a questioning look, she blushed and fussed with the strands of hair that had fallen from her ponytail. “Sara, told me about how you used to have a crush on Theo and how upset you were when Angela announced they were engaged before you left town.”

Well, that answered the questions as to how much Sara knew. Some, but by no means all. He’d found out a month or so after he started college that Angela hadn’t actually told Teddy that Teddy and her were engaged.

According to Steve, who he’d called after he’d finished setting up Teddy’s electrical equipment, Teddy had refused to speak to his sister after Andrew had left town.

It was hard not to smirk at the reminder.

“Yeah, I was a bit upset. But that’s not why I left you know,” he felt the need to point out.
