ORION RISING

* * * *

Half an hour later and we were all in the conference room, staring at the large monitor on the wall. One of the techs had set up cameras to cover our end of the meeting. Another tech loaded charts, models and figures on the projector. Paul sat at the head of the table and I sat beside him.

“Are we all ready? He’s going to be firing questions left, right and centre. He’s going to have his knickers in a twist. We need to be absolutely sure of what we’re saying. He needs to know everything we’ve told him is true.” He leant forward and hit ‘dial’ on the conference phone. The monitor flickered into life. At the other end of the line, a camera zoomed in on a table surrounded by very grim looking men. The Prime Minister sat at the head of the table, his face ashen.

“Dr Clarkson.”

“Prime Minister.” Paul’s voice was clipped. He turned a pen between his fingers.

“This report…” The Prime Minister picked up a sheaf of paper and waved it. “It’s accurate?”

“Yes, sir.”

“I should know better than to ask you that question. It’s not like you’ve ever got it wrong before.”

Paul shifted in his seat and rested his leg against mine. “No, sir.”

“How long do you reckon this ‘event’ will last?”

“We’re not sure—at the moment we’re looking at twenty-four to thirty-six hours.”

“We’ve got the engineers looking at whether the polydomes can take it. We can probably do some reinforcing but I don’t want to spend money where it’s not needed. Are you absolutely certain this is going to happen?”

“All the models indicate it will.”

“How much time do we have?”

“A week. Obviously the team here will be watching twenty-four seven, and if there’s any change you’ll be the first to know.” Paul tightened his fingers around the pen and pushed his leg against mine. I nudged back. It was the only reassurance I could give. I hated that the men in that room in London glared at Paul as if he were the storm bringer.
