Chapter 26

Their captors brought in food and water and Alex and Luke ate and drank without talking. They were both very aware Alex needed to start talking about these dreams Luke implied he had, dreams Luke said he needed to hear, to keep up the pretense of what they were doing for anyone watching.

"I dream sometimes of being a child," Alex started, "and see these symbols in my dreams." He pushed scribbles toward Luke, their hands touching briefly, enough to connect, enough for Alex to say what he needed to say. "We need to create a false trail, get away from the house, into the open. Samuels is sleeping, Griff is here, the Army is aware, and we need to move out of here before they move us."

Luke nodded, looking down at the scribbled symbols, random nonsense that meant nothing in the scheme of things, but enough to keep their captors off of their back. I wish I could talk to you he thought to himself, a deep intense desire to connect the way Alex could with him, and with it came the associated frustration that Alex couldn't hear him. He closed his eyes, focusing on what Alex had said, and sighing, he sketched connections on a clean piece of paper. Idly he started to map the numbers from Alex's back as coordinates, just for something to do, only sitting straighter in his chair when they actually plotted very close to Delphi, in the mountain above the Temple.

Were these numbers actually important? Was he wrong? Was the Oracle a thing, not a person, not Alex? He needed answers and reached out to touch Alex, before hesitating and pulling back, painfully aware the cameras were watching.

He was convinced Alex was the Oracle, the Oracle, but maybe this place, these coordinates, would give Alex some kind of safe place to be, a place his mother had made for him so many centuries ago? Maybe a sanctuary the gods had left him? Luke shook his head, aware that very slowly the fine line between legend and reality was starting to erode, to blur, and to connect and he didn't know how to handle it. Frustration started to build inside him.

Even as he worried, he suddenly had an overwhelming feeling of peace in him, and he looked up, to see a small, almost mischievous smile on Alex's face, his lover's eyes bright. Suddenly, it was very real. That Alex could do this, pour such beautiful, fragile emotions into another person, it made the whole thing, the legends, the landscape of the ancients, Alex's abilities all very, very, real. Calm down, Luke, take it a step at a time. Griff will find us and everything will be okay.

The door opened and Lord Arriseth, gun in hand, stood in the arch, issuing a command. "Alex, you will come with me."

Luke stood quickly. "I need him. I am close to finding coordinates but I need him still." Luke knew he came off sounding desperate, hoping he sounded more like an anxious professor than a frantic lover.
