After a bit of a nap I took the Trabi up to Berlin. There were a few things I needed to do, but first I wanted to check what level of security the major had decided I was worth.

I came off the autobahn at the Waltersdorf exit and took the bridge over the motorway, heading north-west, into the sticks.

It’s a dead-straight stretch of road, over a kilometre before it arrives at the village of Kienberg, which sits on a hairpin bend and boasts just two dirt roads and a handful of holiday shacks and allotments. From the motorway bridge it’s a two-minute drive until you reach the sharp bend which takes the road around the back of the village. Another thirty seconds to gun the Trabant down the main track that runs between the houses and park up. The gap between two bungalows boasts a perfect view of any traffic that is heading towards the village.

This was one of the best places I’d found to break a box or any other clever mobile surveillance techniques—there’s only one route in and I had that covered.

After ten minutes no other traffic had made its way down the cobbled road. Looked like I was clean.

I fired up the Trabant again and pointed it down field tracks until it met a lane that goes around the back of Schönefeld airport.

Turning onto the main road at Schönefeld, I headed up into the body of Berlin, still keeping a wary eye on the rear-view mirror. Leaving the car in Friedrichshain, I jumped onto the S‑Bahn at Frankfurter Allee. I travelled four stops in one direction, then back one.

By now I was convinced the major wasn’t having me followed. At least not today.
