Chapter Four

After the hot tub, they went back downstairs and made love around the house. When they finally went to bed, Robin was so exhausted that she expected to pass out at once. But she didn’t. She was too charged to sleep. Her bum cheeks were tender from where he’d spanked her. She felt sore inside, too. But a good sore. He’d really stretched her.

She lay next to Luke in the semi-darkness, watching his chest rise and fall and listening to the suck and swell of his breath. He didn’t snore. Of course he didn’t. He was far too perfect to snore.

Don’t fall for him, she told herself. This wasn’t real. It was just a fantasy for his book.

On Saturday, they had a love-in. Luke made love to her again and again—against the glass wall of the shower, on the kitchen work surface, and on the vast wool rug.

“You really love sex, don’t you?” he said at one point, wonder filling his voice.

He was a kick-ass cook. He made them scrambled eggs infused with thyme and a salad paired with moon-blush tomatoes. Outside, the wind whined and howled around the tower. The sky was as grey as iron. White caps puckered the ocean. Clouds obliterated the mountains.

Robin found she was falling deeper for Luke despite her warning to herself. She became hooked on the music of his laugh and on the rhythm of his voice. He never talked over her and always listened to what she had to say.

Under his kind gaze, she found herself telling him about her mum and dad.

“I’m not sure if they ever loved each other,” she said. “Or maybe they did, then they fell out of love. Or perhaps my mum picked the first guy who came along. By the time I was growing up they hated each other. That’s what always happens.”

“It doesn’t have to be like that,” Luke said gently. “Romances can last forever.”

Robin stared at him. Who was he to talk? He couldn’t hold down a woman.

When she woke up on Sunday, she found herself getting edgy. The weekend was nearly over, which probably meant the end of her and Luke.

They skipped breakfast. Luke cooked them “linner” as he called it, a meal that came between lunch and dinner. He served them melted goat’s cheese on bread topped with homemade chili jam.

After the meal, he wandered off. Robin loaded the dishwasher for him. But it was so high-tech she couldn’t figure out how to get it to start.

She went looking for Luke to ask him about it. She found him in his bedroom. He was flicking through the line of shirts in his closet. Robin’s heart sank. He was leaving her already. Things really were at an end.

“Are you going out?” she asked. She was amazed at how casual she sounded.

Luke pulled a shirt from the wardrobe. It was in the softest shade of blue.

“I’ve got this party tonight,” he said. “It’s for my agent, Celeste’s, birthday. It’ll be kind of boring. But.
