EPILOGUE

In the days and weeks that followed, the media had a field day with the gruesome crime scene discovered at the water’s edge in sleepy little Redondo Beach, California. The murders had been dubbed “The Pier Killings” and had given birth to numerous theories as to what had occurred that morning and why. Some said that the murders occurred as the result of a drug deal gone bad; others thought it had something to do with human trafficking, and still others, speculated wildly, that it was a rogue undercover operation involving Deputy Chief Dickerson, a police officer with an exemplary record who had been considered for the LAPD top spot when the current chief retired.

Before we left the pier that morning, I had enough resolve left in me to leave the plant money at the scene. The cash, with its traceable serial numbers, added a puzzling wrinkle to the investigation. Before long, the media reported that, “unnamed sources close to the investigation,” were saying that the money found at the scene, could help to exonerate a former cop who had been suspected of stealing a large sum of cash in a sting operation several years prior. The speculation was that he would be offered a job to return to the department, which I’m sure he would not accept.

I had my own wrench to toss into the works, and sent a package to the LAPD headquarters about a week after the shooting went down. In the package were all of the photographs of Dickerson’s son before, and after, his operations. Along with this was a note that stated, quite simply, and in the syntax and spelling skills of a person who struggled with the English language:

“Deputy Chief Dickerson you not pay money like agred. Dirty secret now ote for all to see.”

In the meantime, I had a couple of phone calls to make. One I was looking forward to, one I was dreading.

Marion Holtzinger was relieved to finally be able to return home. In her words she told me, “Family is nice, but it’s nice to say goodbye to them as well.”

She asked if she could see me again, but I told her no, and that I didn’t think it was a good idea. I had been too much of a disruptive factor in her life, and I had done enough damage already. I hung up before she could argue the fact.

My girlfriend Naoko, was a different story. She told me in no uncertain terms that she would not return; to the mainland, or to me. She was getting settled back in her home state of Hawaii, and was enjoying being around her family again. But the main reason she was staying put was because of me. She said she couldn’t forgive me for lying to her for so long, and that whatever shady things I did to make a living, it was not something she could accept or tolerate in a relationship. I told her that I understood and then I said goodbye to her, forever.
