Chapter Six

Emily

I think my manager is going to shit a brick when I call her and tell her I’m not going to catch my flight today.

“Do you know how much this is going to cost?” she barks at me over the phone. “Does this have to do with that Joe guy?”

“Jace,” I correct her. “And maybe.”

“Em,” she warns. I’ve known her long enough that she knows better than to call me Emmy.

Smiling, I tell her my master plan. “It’s not for nothing. I have an invitation to a local gala. It will be good for me if I’m going to make Oakwood City my home.”

“You were serious about that?”

Even before Jace, it had been on my heart—moving here, setting up a home base. Maybe it’s not exactly the hot spot for people in my industry, but it’s a big city with a big airport. I can go anywhere from here. And I want to have a home to come back to when I’m not traveling. A home, my sister, my niece and nephew…and maybe even Jace.

“As a heart attack,” I tell her.

Once she resigns herself to the fact that I’m not going anywhere for the foreseeable future—though not without her fair share of grumbling about having to cancel and rework my plans—she gets the information for the gala so that she can let the event planners know I’m coming.

“I’ll have to get you a dress. And hair, and makeup…”

I give her the name of a local boutique, Plum Crazy, and tell her my sister will handle the rest. She just doesn’t know it yet. But I know Ivy will come through for me.

“And your plus one?” she asks.

“Jace Manning,” I tell her, leaving out the fact that he also doesn’t know it yet.

I’ll just have to tell him tonight and hope that he comes through for me, too.
