Sixteen

Meows came from outside the door, plaintive and desperate. As they went on and on, the cat began to sound damn near pathetic.

I pushed myself up on my elbow and rubbed my eyes to get a sense of my surroundings. Had I fallen asleep? In Landon’s arms?

He swung his legs off the bed. “Harry needs his breakfast.”

It was morning? I’d spent the night?

Slowly and unsurely, I nodded.

Landon gave me an affectionate look. “One more kiss before I feed him?”

“Oh. I—I guess that would be all right.”

Memories of the night before washed over me as he touched his lips to mine. I’d expected a brief peck, but no. He cradled my head and pressed our lips lightly together in something gentler and more loving than I’d ever imagined a kiss could be.

I took a few breaths, willing my heartbeat to calm down. Just when I’d gotten used to the feel of his touch, he pulled ever-so-slightly away and then pressed his lips a fraction of an inch to the left of where they’d been.

Not knowing how to stop, I went along with what he was doing, allowing him to slowly cover every part of my lips in his kisses. When he brushed back a few strands of my hair, I thought it was over. Instead, he drew me in again and started to press the same slow, fluttery kisses to my upper lip.

God, it was like he never wanted to let me go. A strange way to treat someone you only saw as a suitable father for your child… but I supposed Landon was just a strange person.

At last Harry’s cries rose to a fever pitch and he started scratching the door. From the sound of it, he was making full use of his claws.

“You should really get out there before Harry starves to death,” I said.

Landon gave me an amused look. “I suppose you’re right.”

He tossed on boxers and headed down the stairs while I put on my clothes. I was still a sweaty, sticky mess, and my mind probably wasn’t going to function for about a month. Some deep part of me was content—even if the rest of me was fraught with anxiety.

I met Landon in the kitchen, where the orange cat was eagerly digging into his kibble. “I’d better get going,” I said.

“Do you work today?”

“No, I just… no.”

I feared he’d ask me to stay and spend more time with him. As much as I would’ve loved to accept that offer, there was only so much my heart could take.

He looked me up and down. “You want to take a shower? I’ve got an extra toothbrush. You could borrow some of my clothes.”

And look utterly ridiculous drowning in them, I was sure. “It’s okay. My family will be worried about me.”

He laughed. “You’re a grown man. I’m sure this isn’t the first time you’ve spent the night away from them.”

“Uh… right.” I couldn’t think of another time that I had.

“Surely you could call them and let them know where you are.
