Chapter 14

Then

After the show at the Ratt, Doug never did forgive Geoff for locking him out of his own van. Even when Geoff claimed it’d only been a joke, Doug couldn’t quite laugh it off. Later that evening, while lying in the dark on one side of the attic room he shared with Larry, he muttered, “It wasn’t even all that funny. At least, I didn’t think so.”

Alone in his own bed, Larry had to admit he hadn’t thought so, either. Then again, Doug’s trying to spook them when all they had wanted was a little time alone hadn’t exactly been a laugh, either. Why couldn’t he have left them alone? I wouldn’t be here by myself if we’d gone all the way, Larry thought. I could’ve asked Geoff to sleep over. If nothing else, at least my balls wouldn’t ache.

Not for the first time, Doug wanted to know, “What were you two doing in there, anyway?”

“Nothing,” Larry muttered. Then, realizing Doug wouldn’t believe that, he added, “Just screwing around.” He balled the covers up under his chin and closed his eyes, wishing Doug would go to sleep already. Hours had passed, but everything below his waist still throbbed like a rotted tooth. What was Doug so mad about? If anyone should be miffed, it should be Larry. He was the one who got blue-balled here, hello?

But he heard Doug’s bed shift as his friend rolled over, and he could almost feel Doug leering in the darkness. “So you admit you two were having sex in there?”

With a grown, Larry muttered, “Shut up.”

Of course, Doug didn’t listen. “Does this mean you two are together now? Like, I don’t know, fuck buddies? Boyfriends? Whatever you call it.”

“Shut up and go to sleep,” Larry said again. “Nothing happened, okay? Your dumb ass interrupted us before we even got started.”

Of all the people in the world, Doug was the last person he wanted to talk to about how he felt for Geoff. Hell, he didn’t even know himself, and like he said, nothing had really happened between them. He wouldn’t even call it mutual masturbation because someone had interrupted them.

Had they done anything to change their relationship? Larry didn’t know, and he hadn’t had a chance to talk to Geoff about it. After a good twenty minutes of Doug hammering on the side of his van, Geoff had grown bored enough to let him and Rob back in and they’d gone home. End of evening. Geoff spent the ride back snickering under his breath the whole way, and sometimes bursting out in laughter whenever he caught Doug glaring at him in the rearview mirror. Once or twice he’d turned that sunny grin Larry’s way, but the sudden closeness between them, the intimacy, all that disappeared the moment Doug showed up.

So were they anything more than friends? Was Geoff lying in his dorm room, aching in the same places Larry did, wishing he weren’t alone, wishing he could hold Larry in his arms as he fell asleep?

Larry had no clue.
