“SO,” COLIN said, hands tight on the steering

wheel, “your…?”

“Gary,” Adam said, taking a chance that Colin

was talking about what he thought Colin was

talking about.

“Seemed nice,” Colin said.

“Thanks.” Adam kept his eyes on the road

even though he wasn’t the one driving. But he

could feel Colin looking at him instead of the road,

where his eyes should have been. At breakfast,

Colin had sat down across from Gary and ignored

Adam, but he was clever about it. There was no

silent treatment. No sullenness. Colin was cheerful

as could be as he chatted to Gary about Gary’s

vintage Backward Goofy watch and morphed the

conversation into collections they used to keep.

W henever Adam tried to contribute, Colin

smiled at Gary until Adam finished talking, and

then Colin made a half-interested noise and

resumed the conversation with Gary without

further acknowledgment. It was fucking annoying.

W hat was worse, he deserved it. Even so, it

burned.

The silence in the car was made even more

uncomfortable because the songs on the radio

sucked. Adam looked for an opening to talk about

bad music, but stony silence didn’t have any

openings. Adam changed it to a country station

and sat back, banging against the seat.

Colin didn’t even look at him to acknowledge

that Adam was willingly suffering on Colin’s

behalf. Adam kicked the footwell beneath the

dash. Colin’s knuckles were white from squeezing

the wheel. Adam kicked again. He wished Colin

had stayed in M ontana with his girlfriend.

W hen they arrived at the stadium, it was a

race to see who could get out of the car first.

Adam did. He held the door into the stadium open

for Colin by way of flinging it wide and leaving

Colin to catch it. In the locker room, he didn’t

have to worry about anyone noticing anything off

because as soon as Colin came in, the other

players gathered around to welcome him back.

Adam retreated, ignored, to change at his locker.

In the sliver of space between Fitzgerald and

Turner, he saw Colin smiling.

He turned away and pulled his shirt over his

head. He dragged it up his torso, keeping his face

hidden as long as he could, making a pact with

himself that when it was off completely he’d stop

caring that Colin wasn’t smiling at him anymore.

It was something he’d done as a kid. Change

clothes, change feelings.

It hadn’t worked then, either.

“Evets!” Darling slammed through the locker

room’s entrance.

“Coach?” Colin asked. The players around

him fell back a step to create space.

“In light of the soon-to-be-open transfer

window, Lovell has informed me that there’ll be a

scout here tomorrow looking at you. You going to

let him take you away from us?” Darling asked.

“You tell me,” Colin said.

“You are not. You are going to play your little

ass off so they will go the fuck away and not want

to pay the ridiculously high but totally legitimate

price we’re going to ask for you that will obliterate

any chance they have of staying under the cap.”

No team in M LS was allowed to spend more than

two million dollars total on its players, except for

two optional “designated players,” whose salaries

were not included in that limit.

Adam moved closer. W hy wasn’t Colin on the

protected list? W ith eleven allowable slots, why

wouldn’t Colin have one? Adam wondered if he

was on it.
