Chapter 23

Monday February 12th

“Call him again,” Sonny urged.

“I’ve tried them both for the last two hours,” Eva replied. She’d called Gray and Melissa constantly on her way back to the hospital, but it always went to voicemail. “Their phones must be off.”

“Then call the ship. Better still, the cruise company.”

“And tell them what?” Eva asked him. “That eleven men are going to sink the Pearl of the Orient? If they didn’t think I was a crackpot, they’d want names at the very least. I haven’t got anything concrete to give them. All I know is that the man running the show is called Croft, but he’s traveling on a false passport.”

Sonny looked thoughtful, then his face lit up. “Call Tom!”

Eva sighed. “I just told you, I can’t get hold of him.”

“No, call the ship and ask to speak to him.”

Eva could have kicked herself for not thinking of that. She took out her phone and did a search for the cruise line, then called the customer service department. After five minutes on hold, she was given a direct line to the ship. Eva placed the call.

“Pearl of the Orient, Danielle speaking, how may I direct your call?”

“I need to speak to—” Eva was about to say Tom Gray, but remembered that he went by another name now. What was it?

“I’m sorry, who did you need to speak to?”

“Don Graham,” Eva said when the name came to her. “He’s in one of your suites on the seventeenth deck.”

“One moment please.”

Eva heard elevator music, then the lady came back on the line. “I’m sorry, but there’s no response from his stateroom. Would you like to leave a message?”

“Yes. Tell him to call Eva immediately. It’s urgent, a real emergency.”

“I’ll certainly do that, ma’am.”

Eva hung up. “He’s not in his room, but they’ll get him to call.”

“Then we wait,” Sonny said.

“No, we don’t,” Eva said. “Warning Tom is one thing, but he’s unarmed and there’s eleven of them. At the moment, he has no idea who they are, so he can’t act until they make a move. I have to help him.”

Sonny frowned. “Something tells me you’ve already got an idea in mind, and I’m not gonna like it.”

“That’s only because you won’t be involved.” Eva took out her phone and sent a message to Farooq Naser.

“Is it what I think it is?” Sonny asked.

“Depends. If you’re thinking about a night incursion from twenty-five thousand feet onto a moving ship in the middle of the Atlantic, then yeah, we’re thinking the same thing.”

Sonny sat up, wincing as he did so. “Even I wouldn’t have come up with an idea that stupid. If you miss the boat, you’re not coming home.”

“Have you seen the size of that thing? It’s at least three football fields long and eighty yards wide. I’ve hit much smaller landing zones.”

“Not in high winds. Have you checked the weather forecast for that region?”

Eva had to admit that she hadn’t. “But I will. Anyway, what’s the alternative?”

“You could wait for Tom to speak to the captain,” Sonny suggested.
