CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Cole studied the suspect sitting across from her and Callaway in the dimly lit police interview room.

Who are you? she wondered. And what were you doing near the crime scenes of the victims?

The man's injuries, though minor, looked painful—a bruised eye, swollen lip, and cuts on his forehead and cheek where shattered glass had sliced into his skin during the truck crash. A nurse had tended to him earlier, but the man's sullen expression made it clear that he was far from comfortable. His hands, cuffed together, rested in his lap while his shoulders slumped forward, like a trapped dog trying to think of a way out of its predicament.

"Alright," she said, picking up the file containing information on the suspect. "Let's start with the basics." She flipped open the cover and read aloud, "Darren Prescott. Thirty-four years old, high school dropout. An impressive rap sheet, too," she added, scanning through the pages. "Drug trafficking, assault, money laundering… You've been busy, haven't you?"

Throughout it all, Darren maintained his silence, staring at a point somewhere between Cole and Callaway as if they were nothing more than shadows on the wall. His hollow eyes seemed to be looking beyond them, lost in some distant memory or thought.

Cole stared at Darren, the bandage on his forehead a stark contrast to his dark, matted hair. She took a deep breath, attempting to push through his stubborn silence.

"According to your file, Mr. Prescott," she said, "you're part of an organized crime outfit called the Red Serpents. Is that true?"

Darren remained sullen and silent, refusing to meet her gaze. Cole could feel her frustration mounting, but she forced herself to remain composed.

"Look," she said, leaning forward in her chair. "We found drugs in those oil barrels you were transporting. But we didn't arrest you because of that."

At this, Darren's eyes flicked up to hers for a brief moment, surprise evident in his expression. But just as quickly, he looked away, saying nothing.

"We're investigating a series of murders," Cole continued, watching for any reaction from Darren. "Three campers found tied to trees, stabbed through the heart. Sound familiar?"

Callaway cut in, his impatience boiling over. "You should start talking, Prescott. We've got you on drug trafficking, and you're a suspect in a triple homicide. Silence is not your friend."

Darren's jaw clenched, but he remained mute, staring into the void between them.

"Mr. Prescott," she said, her voice filled with a mix of empathy and determination. "We're trying to help you here. But you need to give us something to work with."

His fingers twitched around his handcuffs, but he still refused to speak. Cole gritted her teeth, forcing herself to remain patient in the face of his obstinance. As the silence stretched out, she could hear the distant hum of the precinct bustling outside the interview room, given a measured beat by the ticking of the clock on the wall.

Cole leaned back in her chair, her fingers drumming lightly on the cold metal table that separated her from the suspect.
